wow, the Cure were great! they didn't even have to play prayers for rain in order to make the sky open up. they played a bit more B-sides than their normal sets, too.

That's part of it, but far from all. If you've been to both, you'll know there's a big difference in the overall footprint of the two and the sheer size of Lollapalooza dwarfs Austin City Limits. I didn't expect that, because most folks behave like Lolla is ACL's bastard child or something. But size isn't everything - Lolla has traditionally had more diversions for those times you can't find a band you like (or you're with non-hardcore festival goers), like sponsored domes or buses and the hammock grove, that kind of thing. And there's a farmer's market with organic foods there, and a dedicated offset electronic stage.

I suppose I just expected to come away really impressed with how much better it was than Lolla, and I was left thinking the opposite. But for Coachella fans, it's pretty similar in layout, while lacking some of the key features - no camping, much less electronic influence, and less art installations. It is what it is. I do like all the flags, though, and the Samsung Galaxy VIP Lounge is a gift from God.

Lolla also attracts the worst of the worst when it comes to crowds. Bros more concerned about getting their drink on yapping during an entire set rather than just going for the music. And the size of Grant Park is the thing I hate the most. It's a pain in the ass to go from one end to the other if you need to catch multiple bands. Yeah there's less electronic but it's never played a big part of ACL aside from a couple big name DJs each year. The thing I hate most about ACL is it's location. It's a park in the middle of a city. It's a pain in the ass to find decent parking close to the festival because every parking lot turns into a tow away zone so you have to pay a ton of money with very limited space.

First time seeing them and I absolutely loved it. Rain wasn't even all that bothersome. Everything about tonight was perfect.

So did anyone else just go through that hellish taxi line nightmare in the pouring rain??

  7. #517

Default Re: Austin City Limits 2013

haha, I didn't even bother with the shuttle or taxis. seems like that line would easily be a couple hours if you stay until the last music is played. we're only about 2 miles from the fest so it takes an hour to get home if we walk. I figured we'd be standing in the rain at least that long!

Good call. We waited 2 hrs in the line and were only about halfway and the taxis just stopped showing up. It was awful. We ended up ditching the line and just caught a shuttle to 6th and congress and waved down a cab. Quite the experience in pouring rain. You are lucky to only be 2 miles from the fest!

I think you're being both a tad too general and a mite too personal about it. Every festival has its ups and downs... unless you designed the fest, you should probably just accept that and enjoy each festival for what it is.

Nathanfairchild - Agree about the bro crowds at Lolla, but there are plenty of bros at every festival. Brochella at Tiesto, yes? Tons of muscled up Jersey Shore wannabes pretty much every show. I witnessed an amusing moment in the Samsung Lounge yesterday when a muscled up bro with mohawked hair walked up to the back of the (very busy) bar and said "Hey, bro, can I just get a couple teas?" to the guy stocking the supplies. The response was a predictable "Man, I'm just barbacking, you gotta respect the line." Oh, bros.

Also agree about the horribly long walk from one end of Grant Park to the other if they've scheduled weird conflicting acts at the same side and well-matched acts at the other side. But, if they do a good job scheduling, it makes life a lot easier.

Oh, and another thing... chairs suck. Can we all just generally agree or will there be a festival chair elitist who wants to call me an asshole for suggesting that you have a couch in your fucking house, not at the park, so use it?

That's crazy. The park isnt flooded. Town Lake is high but in no way a threat to fest goers. I don't get it.

I'm also not in town, just being updated by a buddy working a food booth.

Opinion poll needed. If I bought my tickets below face value on eBay, should I expect a 1/3 refund on the price I paid? When the seller gets his refund, he will about have broken even. I wouldn't expect 1/3 back, but something would be nice. If I wanted to be a dick, I'm sure I could thru eBay buyer protection, I'll send him a message and see what he says.

Sad. Wanted to see AFP, The National, Franz, etc... but to be fair, I've seen them all before and many festival fans probably have as well.

Early drive home, thanks for hosting, Austin.

I would imagine so. They guarantee tickets to be authentic, I don't see how they wouldn't offer the same protection for cancellations.

@Robin - what am I gonna do with all this lube now?

    From their site...

Refunds will be issued automatically by check from Front Gate Tickets within three weeks. One-third of ticket price will be refunded to all ticket buyers based on original ticket price paid, and will be mailed to the billing address on the original order.

Forget what I said earlier. Just recieved a pic from a friend, most of the park is standing water with some areas as deep as knee high.

Unfortunatley I doubt this rain will have little effect on the drought and our empty lakes.

The storm/lightning kept me up till 5 am or so. Crazy. Anyway, it would be nice if some of the bands did shows at various venues around the city today. Offer free admission to those with wristbands. Might not be realistic, but it would be a nice consolation for pass holders...

I tweeted the National and let Matt know that my house has room.

but yes, I will be checking some bands twitter feeds throughout the day and hoping for the best.
