I love that song and was glad I decided to stay, but the first part was freaking horrendous I was ready to leave.

Interesting you say that, because I actually really enjoyed that set. The band wasn't the best but they were servicable and I was really digging Bombino's jamming and guitar skills, but maybe that's because I'm a sucker for those kinds of things.

I would like to second whoever mentioned Poolside. The lead singer for that band is one of the most boring live frontmen that I have ever seen. He was absolutely devoid of energy. The band sounded good, but the lead singer killed it for me. On the bright side, it did lead to me seeing STRFKR's set just in time for the sumo wrestlers.

I never listened to his solo record, so I can't tell which were new songs, but most of them had very, very interesting things going on. And I don't know how is your idea of not want to be in a place, but at least at W1, and even with his eccentric drunk stumbling frontman style, the guy left his throat and lungs in the stage.

The negative reactions are normal, because he made something different, probably not suitable for the kind of crowd he was facing. A lot of people went there waiting for the guy to play last night and amuse them like they think they deserve, but no single fuck was given. He played all his hardcore punk shit to a crowd waiting for something "catchy" and easy to digest. He made a show to offend the average festival goer like you, he took risks, which I think is awesome and deserve some respect.
I agree with all this, especially that last part.

What I loved about his set weekend 1 was out of all The Strokes songs he chose to play the "strangest" one, Ize of the World, a song that's mostly overlooked by occasional Strokes fan. That song may also be the most powerful and most interesting song JC ever wrote with The Strokes. To have that song about innovation thrown next to experimental tunes was pretty rad.

You did more than check them out.

I swear I saw you in the skank pit on the big screen.

Julian Casablancas. Phoned it in. zero effort. Close second was Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, who likes to end every song with a sudden stop and then says "Blues Explosion". ugh

The worst performance of my 3 weekends was at Stagecoach. Michael Nesmith (of the Monkees) was just awful. Not country. Not rock n' roll. Only sangs songs he wrote and you couldn't see his face because he had to read the lyrics off an iPad that was mounted with the mic. People left by the droves, including myself. He was the meltdown that I thought I would see at Coachella.

That's pathetic...using an iPad while playing on stage at StageCoach.

I'd expect to see that at a local bar...no way at large events like this

I understood Billy Joe Armstrong (Green Day) having a music stand while covering for the Replacements lead singer.

    GayPalmSprings- all three weekends....Impressive

I wasn't there W1, but I agree, it's one of their most epic songs.

I though JC's choice on wk2 with "take it or leave it" was along those lines of "fuck you guys, this is my new sound, i'm not playing the hits & this isnt a sing along. take it or leave it."

I did see the sound guy explaining to another crew member about how "julian wanted his vocals that way", sent through a guitar amp/pedal. It was totally on purpose, and most of you are oblivious to that, wether you liked it or not. It was a ballsy set & I respect him for not playing Instant Crush.

I was by no means expecting/demanding the helmets for Instant Crush, but he still could have sung it. It really shows off his vocal range. ♥

I really dug JC -- definitely didn't phone in his performance on W1. Amazing the notes he can hit and hold. That said, the vocal treatment via guitar amp/pedal was brutal on my ears. Didn't help that I was right next to the speakers stage right. Had to stick an earplug in my left ear and keep my right ear faced out to avoid massive permanent tinnitus.

    Worst set? The Knife. Easily.

I was really let down by The Knife. I wasn't necessarily against the concept of the performance, but they just don't have very good moves.

I left Calvin Harris weekend 1 saying it was the worst set I've ever seen at the festival. His "performance" was bad enough but to have a crowd that size discourages me on what the future of Coachella is going to be.

Then weekend 2 I saw about 10-15 minutes of Girl Talk and it somehow managed to be worse.

Completely disagree on the Knife. I went to it thinking I'd leave early to get a good spot for Outkast and ended up digging it so much I stayed for the whole thing. Good think too because that Outkast set was bland and they didn't start until 11:30 anyway.

Did the same thing with the knife.. Couldn't leave their set.. Ended up leaving Outkast because it bored me to death.. Wonderful choice because Crosses was amazing

    Sucks to hear.
    Whiskey Sour

    2 oz blended whiskey
    Juice of 1/2 lemon
    1/2 tsp powdered sugar
    1 cherry
    1/2 slice lemon

Shake blended whiskey, juice of lemon, and powdered sugar with ice and strain into a whiskey sour glass. Decorate with the half-slice of lemon, top with the cherry, and serve.

This must have been weekend 2; weekend one they were awesome

While no one else was as bad as Julian, I was pretty disappointed by MS MR. Even when you get over the frontwoman's creepy-as-all-hell smile, it felt like all of "Hurricane" was on playback, the audience honestly sang the Arctic Monkeys cover better than she did, and the other songs just didn't sound good in general.

I hate to say it but Outkast really was quite horrible week 1. And I wouldn't post this unless I really felt this way. Andre looked like he did not wan't to be there 100% of the time. Left out a ton of his lyrics and would just walk around on stage. It's not a good thing when you are one of the biggest acts to come to Coachella and you have to say "Coachella make some fucking noise" 23 times for Coachella to actually make some noise. Disappointing. Really wanted them to do well. Apparently they did better week 2 but wish they would have had a decent show week 1.
Also, for all the people on the thread that said Outkast was the best show you saw week 1...comon. I know you were excited to see them and it was there first show in years but...best show. For shame. For shame

I didn’t think Outkast sucked, but they definitely were not interesting. Coachella is good for bringing in artists that when read they are playing you think “WTF did they book them?”, but then you go and see them and it all makes sense. I never got that feeling for Outkast. People around me were into it but they were a tiny minority. Good for those that were into it and got their feel. I walked.

the problem with Outkast was everyone was there to see them, but no one was familiar with their music. same could be said for almost every Coachella artist.
Crowd wouldn't bob their heads or move to the music. that kinda shit makes the performer not give a fuck either....

Almost none of the problems that plagued weekend 1 were there for weekend 2. OutKast started on time, Andre seemed really into it a lot of the time, the crowd actually gave a shit, Future was not there, the solo sets were shorter, and they got in a hell of a lot more songs.

Nobody completely sucked for me this year, but there was some low energy.

    Wknd 1

The Cult's energy was very low. The DDGirls were ok, they seemed like they couldn't handle the sun. Classixx were fine, just not my thing.

There were acts that were just ok, but they didn't suck: Ms Mister, Group Love.

Julian was a highlight week 1. I still don't understand why so much hate towards his performance?
