Kinda baffled someone is upset about a DJ not addressing the crowd. Cringe every time I hear a dumb DJ say "wassup coachella".

I was excited to see Superchunk but they just didn't do it for me.

Heard about 10-15 minutes of Girl Talk and it was fucking horrible. I don't get that shit.

Oh yeah, and Julian Casablancas. I decided to take a nap after 3 songs. I wasn't expecting any Strokes songs, it just sounded shitty.

Pharrell was fine for what he is. I watched some of the weekend 1 clip and he sounded dreadful, so like outkast, i had super low expectations going in. It was just radio hit after radio hit, like Calvin Harris, except at least he was performing. With that said, I wish I would've been in the Gobi watching DARKSIDE but the fiancee won that decision.

I didn't see too many bad acts this year. Maybe the Ramones cover band Gabba Gabba Heys because they kept falling out of sync with each other. Jagwar Ma also let me down a little bit, only because my expectations were through the roof. But they were by no means the worst or bad.

I feel like I'm the only person that liked Julian Casablancas's set. I'm not even a big Strokes fan but I liked the noisy tropicalia feel of the opening song with the guitar player playing a thumb piano through a distortion pedal. I thought his new material was pretty interesting sounding and I've never given him much credit before. The sound wasn't great though.

My Least Favs...in order of decreasing wretchedness.

    1) Calvin Harris - more for what he represented re: Coachella's future than anything else. For me, the most depressing Coachella moment ever.
    2) Foxygen - 1st half Week 2 - lead singer needs to find some balance in his schtick
    3) Ratking - one of the early morning Rap acts was amazing (Flatbush Zombies), the other was not.
    4) Kate Nash - Others loved it, I though her voice sounded horrible (so shrill) and band was not impressive
    5) Julian Casablancas - With others, got nothing from his set.
    6) ASAP Ferg - Another rap set that did next to nothing for me - felt the most dumbed down of all the Rap performances.
    7) Dum Dum Girls - 1st half set Week 1 - second half of their Week 1 set was pretty fantastic.
    8) The Cult - only old time act that straight-up disappointed at this years fest.

Otherwise I have little bad to say about any of the other performers I caught...no miracle sets this year (Replacements/Future Islands/Frank Turner came closest), which is first time I've ever said that about a Coachella lineup...but very solid performances top to bottom.

Felt like a Grammy show to me. Fun songs...but after a while I just got sick of all the surprise guest stuff going on this year...it's great when it happens in 3-4 sets over the course of the weekend, when it's every other set, as it felt like this year, it's just becomes too much and starts diminishing the impact of the actual music.

What? What? I was blown away by how talented he was. I guess part of that was just the performance itself (which you would have missed if you were in the beer gardens, but I couldn't believe how good his voice sounded live.

I heard in 2008, Calvin Harris played with a band in one of the tents.

I was disappointed in Banks. I love her EP, but she just sounded a little off and uncomfortable. I believe this was her first big performance, so no real shocker there, but still...

I loved it too. I like the new stuff better than his first solo album. This sound suits him better I think.

I was standing on the rail next to 5 girls who all had matching Julian Casablancas and the Voidz t-shirts. Unlike the Lana Del Rey fans, none of these girls were even the slightest bit annoying.

I have seen The Strokes twice before, as well as Julian at Coachella 2010- so I was expecting him to put on a great performance like I had seen before. I had no idea that he would be playing all new material, and not play a single Strokes song as far as I could tell (anyone can confirm this?). The new material was just not catchy to me at all, only maybe 1 song was okay to me. I'm honestly not sure that I clapped once the whole set. And the entire crowd seemed dead basically the entire set, not sure how to respond to what they were watching. Also, he seemed drunk, and that he really didn't want to be there at all. His speeches in between songs were also bizarre and rambling. I was tempted to leave after 3 songs, but I stayed since I was waiting to see if he would play any Strokes songs, or if the trainwreck would continue to develop. Well, the trainwreck continued all the way to the end. One of the worst peformances I've ever seen by anyone in recent memory.

I wonder if Julian is having trouble with alcohol or drugs again? Or if his set is a momentary glitch on the radar? He already seems like a legacy performer - using the coattails of his prior great performances to get people to watch his solo act. Though after that debacle, I will never see him again, and I'm assuming that many other people will not as well. So unless he gets his act together, he might not have many fans left if the continues his "No Strokes songs" policy at future shows. Anyone have more insight on him or what happened? Just puzzling to me.
The Strokes at Coachella 2011 was one of the most boring performances ever, luckily I realized it after the first two songs and could catch most of PJ Harvey.

I went to Casablancas (W1) with 0 expectations, just to fill the time gap and waiting for an awful performance just like some of the reports of SXSW said. And it was the biggest surprise of this year to me.

The sound is completely agressive, unclean and ridiculously loud. It's one of the sloppiest sets i've seen in my life. But after a few songs you get that is not an accident, that things are not going wrong. His voice is going out through the same amp than one of the guitars. He's aiming for that dirty sound. I never listened to his solo record, so I can't tell which were new songs, but most of them had very, very interesting things going on. And I don't know how is your idea of not want to be in a place, but at least at W1, and even with his eccentric drunk stumbling frontman style, the guy left his throat and lungs in the stage.

The negative reactions are normal, because he made something different, probably not suitable for the kind of crowd he was facing. A lot of people went there waiting for the guy to play last night and amuse them like they think they deserve, but no single fuck was given. He played all his hardcore punk shit to a crowd waiting for something "catchy" and easy to digest. He made a show to offend the average festival goer like you, he took risks, which I think is awesome and deserve some respect.

Decided to see Austra. They were in my playlist and caused me to go "hmm, that sounds interesting" when their songs would come on. I would've been better off walking to my car to listen to their set on my car stereo. I think they had sound issues but they were just terrible.

From there, it was on to Dum Dum Girls. They should be in my wheelhouse. Nice looking chicks with guitars playing garage rock. If there is a physics term for negative energy, they embodied it. Reminded me of the Yuck 2012 set.

I wasn't dying to see City and Colour but took in their set to pass the time. Serious snoozer. Terrible idea to put them on the Main.

Bombino was disappointing. The sound wasn't very good. I don't think this is a band he plays with all the time and it showed. I liked listening to them in the run-up but after taking in about 10 minutes, decided to check out Fishbone.

Temples was good, but not great, perhaps a victim of my high expectations. I think they formed by recording songs in one guy's house, so they probably need some repetitions. I would definitely see them again because the record is very good.

This was a great year for me. For most of the acts mentioned above, I just moved on to something better, so no real complaints.
I have been to concerts. I will go to concerts in the future.

Poolside was not interesting. I kind of like their recorded stuff, but often live bands like them make things a little punchier. they were just as soporific and their harmonies were often off.

Nicolas Jaar was not as good as other times I've seen him, maybe if he had longer it could have turned into a better set.

Factory Floor Wk1 was basically a trainwreck. It was like listening to people trying to play two "songs" at once, with unintelligible vocal sounds and (seemingly unintended) feedback on top.

Strange. They were really tight W2 and the dozen people there seemed pretty into it. I enjoyed it a lot.

You are right, unfortunately. Austra was one of my favorite new-ish acts I was excited to see playing Coachella this year. Enjoy most of the songs off their couple of albums, and they put on a great show at the Crescent in Phoenix last fall.

But their WE 1 set was not very good, mostly (though probably not entirely) due to sound system issues. They weren’t the only ones with that problem in the Gobi WE 1 (Bombino was also in that crew, as was Darkside). Gobi’s had this problem before.

WE 2 was different, though. No sound system issues in the Gobi, and Austra’s set was much better (though still not as good as at the Crescent).

“Worst performance” for me WE 1 was a tie between The Preatures (early on the Coachella stage) and Foxygen (early on the Outdoor). Neither was terrible, just not all that good. Nothing WE 2 that counted as “worst” for me.
