Shop to make breast milk ice cream
LONDON (Reuters) – A specialist ice cream parlor plans to serve up breast milk ice cream and says people should think of it as an organic, free-range treat.

The breast milk concoction, called the "Baby Gaga," will be available from Friday at the Icecreamists restaurant in London's Covent Garden.

Icecreamists founder Matt O'Connor was confident his take on the "miracle of motherhood" and priced at a hefty 14 pounds ($23) a serving will go down a treat with the paying public.

The breast milk was provided by mothers who answered an advertisement on online mothers' forum Mumsnet.

Victoria Hiley, 35, from London was one of 15 women who donated milk to the restaurant after seeing the advert.

Hiley works with women who have problems breast-feeding their babies. She said she believes that if adults realized how tasty breast milk actually is, then new mothers would be more willing to breast-feed their own newborns.

"What could be more natural than fresh, free-range mother's milk in an ice cream? And for me it's a recession beater too -- what's the harm in using my assets for a bit of extra cash," Hiley said in a statement.

"I tried the product for the first time today -- it's very nice, it really melts in the mouth."

The Baby Gaga recipe blends breast milk with Madagascan vanilla pods and lemon zest, which is then churned into ice cream.

O'Connor said the Baby Gaga was just one of a dozen radical new flavors at the shop.

"Some people will hear about it and go, 'yuck' but actually it's pure, organic, free-range and totally natural," he said. "I had a Baby Gaga just this morning and I feel great."

Merle, I believe I may be able to help you sneak in your muschacha. I had a similar experience at Fuji Rock last year. My payment terms are as follows-- 45% of your stock for the weekend, and companionship in my tent. I will warn you in advance, my tent is used primarily in the dense jungles of Cambodia, and thus it is not very spacious.

Woman sprays police with breast milk

By Cynthia Johnston | Reuters Tue, Jun 28, 2011tweet17EmailPrintCHICAGO (Reuters) - A lactating U.S. woman was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct after she sprayed sheriff's deputies with breast milk as they tried to remove her from a vehicle, police said on Monday.

Ohio-resident Stephanie Robinette, 30, was arrested and charged with domestic violence and assault linked to a domestic dispute, as well as resisting arrest and disorderly conduct, according to the Delaware County Sheriff's Office.

It said Robinette's husband told authorities the pair had been attending a wedding when his wife got drunk and started a dispute. He said that she hit him multiple times before locking herself in her car outside a banquet facility on Saturday.

Sheriff Walter L. Davis III said that when police approached the car to speak to her, she yelled profanities and refused to get out.

"When deputies attempted to remove Robinette from the vehicle she advised the deputies that she was a breastfeeding mother and proceeded to remove her right breast from her dress and began spraying deputies and the vehicle with her breast milk," Davis said.

Robinette was later removed from the car and arrested after more deputies arrived on the scene.

"This is a prime example of how alcohol can make individuals do things they would not normally do," Davis said.

    Should the government mandate breastfeeding?

    By Michelle Maltais

    9:25 AM PST, February 1, 2014

When it comes to infant nutrition, the experts agree that breast is best. But should government be legislating lactation?

That's what is happening in the United Arab Emirates. Last week, the Federal National Council’s Health, Labor and Social Affairs committee passed a clause in its broad Child Rights law making breastfeeding a "duty, not an option, for able mothers."

Members of the committee ultimately declared, after what was described as "a marathon debate" that every infant has the right to be breastfed for the first two years of life, according to a report in the National.

Under the law, a wet nurse would be provided for women unable to breastfeed for health reasons.

Still, the minister of social affairs voiced concerns about the enforcement of such a law. "If the law forced women to breastfeed, this could lead to new court cases," said Mariam Al Roumi, according to the National's report.

Among the concerns was the type of repercussions that could come from a mother's neglecting to nurse: Would a husband be permitted to sue his wife? How else might a mother be punished?

Many in the U.S. have been reacting to the notion of legislating what a woman should do with both her own body and her own child.

My position? My baby, my breasts, my call.

Frankly, managing day-to-day familial expectations of being a good parent are enough without adding the weight of a government mandate to my shoulders -- or my breasts.

Members of that UAE committee have said the mandatory breastfeeding clause is designed to help "nurture a strong relationship between a mother and child." And that's truly admirable.

A growing and vibrant effort to encourage and support nursing as a first choice for feeding continues to gain momentum in the United States. And here in California, there are numerous measures in place to facilitate nursing moms, including protecting the right to breastfeed in public.

But no matter how forceful the push by government, medical community and advocacy groups, the key is choice.

Being a new mom is stressful enough, and actually breastfeeding can be challenging enough, without the added pressure of possible repercussions for neglecting or falling short of a government-enforced maternal obligation.

Besides, there are numerous reasons a mother might choose not to nurse.

As Arabian ethnographer and La Leche League member Marie-Claire Bakker said, breast-feeding is a deeply personal and intimate experience, and the mother-child "relationship and bond cannot be legislated."
