We have to prepare the wifi for our guests in our casinos/hotels as per maximum occupancy of the area accordign to fire code. So just to cover one of my bowling centers I needed $30k in AP's for all the people we could hold at max capacity. That's why I go with the high price point... because if you let everyone on they'll start uploading video to youtube and facebook and overload the bandwidth.

I don't need to upload everything live. I just want to be able to separate from my friends and be able to meet up with them later without having to agree on meeting locations out of the way of the acts we want to see.
Ah, good point. Hmm... fuck, how could you get around that. Well... shit, this is actually an interesting problem to have to get around. It would be useful to know how many APs were at that keynote and how many people. At Coachella at least it's a more open space but not THAT open when you're talking about 75,000 people.

Coachella should just get Google to come in and lay down one of their fancy new blanket wireless signals that deliver 600Mbps or whatever fucking insane figure that is. Fuck it, they're a sponsor, make them run some of that proprietary shit down to Indio.

Knowing what they had at the keynote's not really relevant. I have to ask my buddy in Networking to break it down for me again. The AP's are all listening for the phones reaching out to them. But these days people have multiple phones and tablets... so one person is now possibly pinging an AP 3x and when you extrapolate that... gets really hairy fast...

I don't specialize in wireless communications so I can't say for certain if there's ways around it. Because requiring a login or even mac filtering doesn't prevent the AP's from being hammered on by every device within reach.

It 'would' take someone like Google to come down and slap some GOOGLE+ booths all over the place. I mean they sponsor a stage at Lollapalooza.... they could absolutely pull something awesome off. Even give some Google Glass to people to demo around the festival like Sony did with those cameras.

But that's just all pipe-dream and the most likely thing to happen is cellphone coverage or wireless broadband will evolve to something useful in that area...

I don't even think cellphone coverage is all that bad out there, I just think the cell towers can't handle the strain.

Okay so there's network gear out there made for "Ultra high user density" but the one's I've looked up can manage 500/ea...

So uh... 90k coachella attendees? And let's say out of those a conservative estimate of 30k have two cellphones or a cellphone and a tablet.... 240 AP's capable of handling 500 client connections. And who knows, I'm out of my wheelhouse here... there might be more limitations I'm not seeing. Point is... well wait... not everyone's going to be at the same place all the time....

    Maybe it could work...

Meeting up with lost friends who are on drugs and not having a good time is something that all friends should be able to do for each other.

I hope Coachella never has WiFi, half the reason I go is to get away from all that bullshit.

THey bring in mobile towers but it never helps that much really. What they need to do is exactly as they stated pump a bunch of broadband lines and then have a 3rd party set up festival wide wifi. I would def. pay to have decent speeds all weekend.

WiFi, is this happening, or has already happened last year? Was out of the game in 2013. Would love to be able to use iMessage, so I can find people. Although the thought of having no service and not being able to get in touch is actually nice.

Verizon works fine I work for them and have to respond to emails and take some calls in the morning maybe a 15 minute delay or so in the festival but in the campgrounds it works fine I use my mifi for my.laptop and stream music in the campsite , they set up cell on light trucks (colts) to give better service it will still.be marginal at times once I get in the festival I pretty much turn it off anyways I wouldn't even bring my phone if I didn't have to work in the morning

I hate going to concerts if I can't be texting on my cell and wifi'ing my favorite games. We need full service to enjoy the music experience.

I'm actually kind of surprised at some of the responses.

In 2013, I had zero issues with data and calls/texts. All three days, at just about any time (with some minor exceptions). Why? Because AT&T rolled out their new high bandwidth/throughput antenna setup. You can read about it here:

    http://9to5mac.com/2013/05/19/inside...t-huge-events/

It's variable (obviously) based on how many users have their phones on and how many are actively using it, but the reality is that the new setup can handle much higher peak use than previously, so assuming they bring it out again this year, there won't be major problems like we have at other festivals and high capacity events (sports, etc)

Last year my T-Mobile service worked just fine. I remember the first year I went in 2010 it didn't work at all but has improved each year since. I was able to promptly send and receive texts. Other data usages were slow during times if not unusable but as stated above, you really shouldn't be using them. You're at a music festival!

as a sprint user, data and calling was ok. if your in the stage areas, especially the main stage, you wont get any signal. if your out in the middle of the field, your ok. but keep in mind, just enjoy the music and leave the facebook baby mama at home.
