Default Is it even possible for Coachella to have full wifi and cell service?

How many towers would each cell company have to provide? How hard would it be to do? Is this year going to be better than last year?

phone service at coachella is bad...beyond bad. But you know what...I've grown to LOVE IT! I'm 100% out of touch with everyone outside of the festival. No one bothering me about shit I need to do later or things going on that have no relevance. I took my phone with me and carried it around my first two years...even tried making a few calls....which rarely worked.
Now I drop my phone off in the locker (turn it off) and take my goodies that I need (money, ??? & ID) and off I go. No one interrupts me, no random lame texts of 'How's the festival'...etc. I'm not the guy trying to cell phone record the concert - instead I'm dancing, meeting the people around me and having fun (living in the moment).
I've learned to love it. I have a cell phone at arms reach 362 days a year....3 days a year I shut it down.
Just when I think you couldn't possibly be any dumber, you go and do something like this…and totally redeem yourself!

Wifi service, yes. Cell service, probably not.

Wifi could be provided but the infrastructure and bandwidth has to be alloted for the event.

A third party vendor could offer the option to Coachella and provide it to attendees for a fee.

I'd happily pay up to $100 for Wifi access all weekend long. That way I can have data enabled and not worry about my battery dying due to 3G/4G suckyness.

The worse the signal is, the more battery it will use up trying to use data.

A friend of mine sets up mobile towers at festivals like this for AT&T. Didn't have the heart to tell him that most people complain about the the lack of adequate service from that provider in particular.

maybe if you told him how bad it was, they could fix it?

I was making deliveries to the festival grounds yesteday. Sprint and ATT&T were installing temporary towers and equipment. Not sure how much its going to help though. This will be my first festival as well. Really looking forward to it.

Are you fucking kidding me? You'd pay 100 dollars to have your data enabled without it draining your battery?

Mobile antennas just boost carrier coverage which is bad to begin with, has nothing to do with WiFi or even 4G/LTE because those are different radios altogether. On top of that you get however many thousands of people trying to use it and it grinds to a halt.

The only way to provide access to a crowd of this size is to provide WIFI and to have a fee associated so that not everyone uses it rendering it useless.

cell service has been better every year. I have verizon and I was getting texts from friends on verizon within 15 min and att/sprint/tmobile within 20min. If you are inside a crowded tent or main/outdoor stages you will need to walk out of the crowds. From my experience if you are not in a crowded stage, most texts were working. (been to coachellas 07-12)

Tip: Timestamp your text messages to your friends so you know when the messages were originally sent.

truth i ugh may just work for one of these companies trying to offload. every year you can see the wifi signal of attwifi around the fields at various spots, just like at starbucks. despite efforts it's just downright fucking hard to provide quality service to that amount of people in that small of an area. There is only so much spectrum, so much radiation and air for signal to travel through. think of 10 people throwing pingpong balls from various spots towards a poll, now think of 10,000 people throwing the ball at the same time. You can add polls but the pingpong balls take up the same amount of air space no matter the polls, in the end you add to many polls and the balls and traveling in to many directions. Rock and a hard place.

Look there's a reason for the price point. A LOT of people can afford paying much less than that for Wifi. But that would render it completely useless.

yea not going to glorify my job or anything but it pays the bills (barely) and allows me to be on PC all day to post on lovely places like this haha.

I do low level unix administration, Debian.. for servers that are the gateway for wifi networks at hotels and places

My question was more about what the fuck is wrong with you that you're at Coachella that you're so fucking compelled to have constant data connection. Step away from the iPhone for a weekend dude. Phones at Coachella should be used for texting your friends to meet up and that's it.

Those things that you think are cell towers are actually RFID antennas. GV tracks your every move thanks to the RFID chip in your wrist band.

Look here steakhead, try not to be so goddamn narrow minded!

Cell coverage is awful every time and unreliable. Why the FUCK wouldn't I use reliable Wifi to communicate with said friends through Push-to-talk apps like Voxer, Tango, Whatsapp or even Skype or Google Hangouts. So I would like a fucking alternative that will work instead of having to deal with cell coverage waving my phone in the air trying to get a text out.

    Fucks sake.

    *Edit*
Also fuck iPhones and iOS in general. As mentioned above I work I.T. and iOS devices are the bane of my existence. They're awful for security and just about any other thing I can think of, including making phone calls.

I'm in IT too, I agree about iPhones. Sometimes I think Steve Jobs just wanted to make our lives as hard as possible when with iTunes and that shit.

I mean I guess I can see what you're saying and it could actually be done for a lot cheaper than 100 dollars per person probably while still getting the amount of bandwidth required, but the number of RADIUS repeaters you would need to cover that area seems like a staggering feat. It would be interesting to try to pull off though. But I think for 30 dollars per person you could probably get it done. A gigabit pipe for the month, the hardware involved in broadcasting the signal is really hard to calculate for me at least (I usually deal with covering office floors and shit like that, you'd have to go out there and do a lot of testing on how far the signal will carry in open air, then map the whole place, etc.) but it could be done.

Precisely why I ask. I know quite well the range of RFID antennae and the kinds of chips being utilized. I'm decidedly against fearmongering.

Set up pre-determined spots to meet up at sets. Easy. No need for phones. It wouldn't be the end of the world if you don't meet up with friends, either.

He's a dipshit dude, don't bother discussing it with him. He does something with really big trucks for a living, hence he's an expert on technology.

Yeah no doubt... but you have to keep in mind the people's phones that aren't using the service will still occupy frequency space. Like that one Apple keynote where there were so many devices in the room it overloaded their AP's and they had to ask people to shut their shit off lol.

We have to prepare the wifi for our guests in our casinos/hotels as per maximum occupancy of the area accordign to fire code. So just to cover one of my bowling centers I needed $30k in AP's for all the people we could hold at max capacity. That's why I go with the high price point... because if you let everyone on they'll start uploading video to youtube and facebook and overload the bandwidth.

I don't need to upload everything live. I just want to be able to separate from my friends and be able to meet up with them later without having to agree on meeting locations out of the way of the acts we want to see.
