That's one reason. There's also a lot of other stuff on that lineup that just simply doesn't tour or play live often at all. Take for example Grouper, or High Aura'd, or someone like Charlemagne Palestine. The big name acts on this fest's lineup are exciting, yes, but I'm sure that NIN and NMH will make their way to my city (LA) in time. Seeing people like Grouper and Merzbow may be a once in a lifetime thing for me. I know it doesn't appeal to everyone but I'm stoked on it.

Anyone here been to MoogFest in the past? How many people attended the fest on average? And how early did you need to get to a venue before an act started? Or is it best to just kind of choose a venue for the night and stay there? I was looking at past schedules and the venue map... and it seemed like some of the nights I would have been happy camping one one venue, while other nights I would want to jump around quite a bit. Would that be possible though?

Also... where is everyone planning on staying? Anyone have any sites offering great deal on hotels near the venues? I will be honest, if I do this trip, it will be on a budget. Im thinking of staying at the Sweet Peas Hostel. It gotten decent reviews on Travel Advisor and Yelp. Anyone else stayed there before?

    best hotel is downtown inn.

it's really easy to go from venue to venue. only one i heard people getting shut out of last year was black moth super rainbow and maybe the magnetic fields, but that was second hand info. i literally watched every set that wasn't orbital from the 3rd row, at worst.

venues are all really close. furthest one is about 10 minutes, but you can get food and smoke joints on the way.

It appears as if the Downtown Inn is sold out. Damn.

Thanks for the tips though! That all sounds pretty good.

What the is weather like in October there? Is it cold? I have literally never been to that part of the county before and have no idea what to expect.

Also, if we stayed just outside of downtown and drove in... what is the parking situation like? The website said parking is "relatively expensive." How expensive are we talking here?

In October it's highly possible that it will still be pretty warm and very humid, but it should be cooling down by then.

there is a lot behind the Thirsty Monk (which is the first bar you should check out) where parking is free on saturday and sunday. not sure about friday.

the thirsty monk is also less than 1 block from the dowtown inn for anyone staying in asheville.

there are tons of cool places in the mountains to drive to during the day also, if you like scenery and shit. i fell into a pool at a bar on the side of a mountain last year.

That week of October is NOT warm on the east coast. You'll barely catch the tail end before it becomes balls-out cold, unless there's an early frost which is entirely possible. Frankly that's kind of a crazy time to have a music festival on the eastern seaboard, I don't know what the fuck they're thinking. This thing IS outdoors, right?

walking to different bars occurs outdoors, yes.

the weather is beautiful, people dress up for halloween, this festival is near perfect.

I forget NC is coastal. Also, this fest is inside venues. You're really only outside walking between venues from what I gather.

Oh okay so all the actual events are hosted indoors? That would make more sense and be fine. The weather's nice enough if you're not standing out in it for long time, and perhaps I should have just read further back, but I was trying to picture actually having to be outside all night at the end of October and I was like Fuuuuuuuuuuuck no.

I've driven up a few times since I moved to Atlanta. Count on highs in the 60's, lows in the 40's (if this year is anything like previous years).

they did away with the outdoor stage the flaming lips headlined for this very reason.

Thanks for sharing those Brooklyne Vegan links. This festival seems ATP"like" minus the artist curations but with the intimate venues and location. The more I read and see the more excited i'm getting for this fest. Anyone know venue capacities for all of the ones they use?

Btw, I don't know how it was in October, but in Sept for Hopscotch in Raleigh last year there were some massive rainstorms. Seeing as how nothing is outdoors at this fest, it shouldn't be a huge problem if that happens, but come prepared since you'll be outside to go between venues.

Is staying a 5min drive from downtown too far? What is parking like downtown or public transit like around there? Hotels downtown seem like 250+ a night, and a hostel doesnt sound up my alley.

i know the orange peel is about 600. that's where BMSR played, and we were shut out. diane wortham is about 200 (andy stott, buke and gase), paul wolfe i wanna say about 1200 (four tet, miike snow, magnetic fields) arena is about 5k (orbital primus ritchie hawtin).

the saturday of the fest with primus and hawtin was way undersold last year. or maybe it was friday. whatever day 1 was.

there will be plenty of parking behind the thirsty monk. most people stay downtown and walk everywhere. a five minute drive in AVL sounds like a bit of a walk.

If you wanna be cheap, just get a cheap hotel outside of downtown and just pay for parking. I'm not sure how much it was but that combine will sure as hell be cheaper than paying $250+ for a downtown hotel. That's what I'm going to do.
