The heat won't be the issue. It's the wind that's going crazy right now. Yesterday (Monday before Coachella) we had 80 MPH gusts here in the valley. It's supposed to be going down in the next few days, but there's potential for wind up the ass.
COACHELLA VALLEY — Strong winds expected to make their way into the Coachella Valley this weekend should be as powerful as the ones that knocked over trees and shut down roads earlier this week.
“It should be fairly comparable,” AccuWeather forecaster Brian Edwards said Friday.
“I’m imagining it’s going to be fairly similar to what you just experienced.”
Northwest winds will enter the desert tonight and last through Sunday.
Sustained winds should reach 30 mph with 40-mph gusts, which is on par with the speeds Coachella Valley residents endured a few days ago.
But on Interstate 10, Edwards said, gusts may reach 55 mph.
The National Weather Service issued a wind advisory through Monday, also indicating the strongest winds will be present on Sunday.
The Coachella Valley sky may be cloudless, but “there will be likely issues with blowing sand and blowing dust,” Edwards said.
This past Monday, a big rig overturned on eastbound I-10 near Date Palm Drive, blocking two lanes for more than two hours.
Vista Chino was shut down at the Whitewater Wash in Palm Springs because of a dangling utility pole that was damaged by high winds.
Not far away, Gene Autry Trail was closed on Saturday and Sunday because of blowing sand.
Elsewhere across the Coachella Valley, trees were blown out of the ground.
Palm Springs police Sgt. Mike Kovaleff said Friday that officials will monitor the areas through the weekend and respond accordingly.
Weather experts encourage residents to drive with caution and to remove any loose objects from their yards.
Today’s temperatures are likely to reach 92 degrees, which is 10 degrees above normal.
Sunday’s high should be 87 degrees.
Worst weather ever in Coachella history. Had to bolt after Nick Cave, but there is always Weekend 2. I used the Neti Pot when I got home. Black black sludge...
I just Q-tipped a pound of dirt out of each ear...After showering.
Well this surely blows, sitting in our teepee in the middle of a fucking dustbowl...
The weather was/still is awful. Walking to lot 2A, the car camping area was disastrous. Some tents were steady, but there were plenty that were tossed around.
121 on Saturday, in Coachella....wow; when I still lived in the Valley, I experienced 122 doing home visits. I was delirious. I'd be drenched in sweat just walking from the car to the office door.
Upcoming: 04/11/14-04/13/14 - Coachella Weekend One (Empire Polo Fields); 04/18/14-04/20/14 - Coachella Weekend One (Empire Polo Fields)
