Question do you work in movies/tv?

it seems like a lot of people on this board either work for movies, tv, or do something similarly related.

anyways, if you do and are willing to share, what do you do? how do you get to see all these awesome movies before the rest of us? and more importantly, why don't a lot of these movies make it here?!?

Are you looking for a couch to cast your load on for the festival?

I work for TV. I have friends that work on film & in the industry. Sometimes I see films early because they can snag Screener copies. Also, lots of films come to L.A. or NY before they go anywhere else.

" and more importantly, why don't a lot of these movies make it here?!? " -That is something you should asks your local theater manager. Sometimes you have to pressure them, so they get what you want.

Ivy, the reason that many movies get a one-week run in Los Angeles or New York before the end of the year and then don't make it to the rest of the country until months later is that the distributors want to qualify the films for Oscar contention without sacrificing their commercial prospects. Of course, a movie has to play in cinemas for one week during the year in the United States to be elligible for the awards for that year; but if the movies were left in release in December, they would be trying to compete in a crowded field. If you can put "Children of Men" out on Christmas, ride it for a week, and then give it the formal wide release in January - when it has to compete with throwaways the likes of "The Hitcher" and "Stomp the Yard" rather than against allegedly similar, serious-minded fare like "Blood Diamond" and "Apocalypto" - it increases the upside of the movie's commercial potential.

Do I agree with the strategies here? No. But they're not entirely senseless.

Also, I work in the Operations department at Warner Bros. Studios. We rent out the soundstages & exterior sets to productions, and we act as the liaison between the shooting companies and the other studio departments (who provide them with equipment rentals, labor, food service, parking, security, etc).

Furthermore, in my pursuit of a career as a writer & director, I have stumbled upon many screening series' that allow me to see movies before they come out, oftentimes with Q & A's. There are also a few small-ish film festivals held in LA throughout the year, test screenings (which I lie my way into, because as an employee of WB, I'm not supposed to be able to attend these), sneak previews (not just an LA thing), etc. Basically, there are a million ways to see a movie in a theater for free that are entirely legal....at least when you live here.

I sat on a Dallas -> LA flight with an up and coming screenwriter who was shopping his script to potential studios. He told me it was a martial arts based film with LOTS of integrity. He intended to have Wesley Snipes star in it, John Woo direct. Called it "BLACK SAND." Keep your eyes open for it.

Also I live in a Nielsen house. I take the responsibility very seriously.

I dabble here and there. Aslan is my boy.

And yeah, what Gabe said concerning release dates on films. Also, sometimes, great films come out to a limited release and just dont make money. And we (LA folks who like movies) talk about them but due to aforementioned lack of cash they dont get more than about 50 miles from either coast.

If any of you plan on watching the Academy Awards, keep your eyes peeled for a Diet Coke commercial in which an actress has a tantrum and won't leave the trailer until a PA brings her - you guessed it - a Diet Coke. The PA then has to scramble all over the backlot, driving in his golf cart and narrowly avoiding a firey car wreck, crashing into a phone booth, and then running frantically to deliver his quarry.

If you catch this commercial, you will experience my entire day today in 30 seconds.

    You crashed a cart?

And who is the star that wouldn't come out of the trailer?

Ha ha ha ha ha.....totally not where I was going with that at all. Although now that I read it over, my wording was confusing. So....my bad, y'all.

I meant that I supervised the commercial I described, which entailed me standing around all day watching them blow up a car, crash into a phone booth, etc. Thankfully, I've never had - and most likely, will never have - to fetch snacks for actors. And I don't know who the actress in the commercial is, or even if it's a real star; that portion of the ad was shot somewhere else.

I had a Japanese commercial that's going to star Cameron Diaz that was going to shoot here on Monday, but that went away.

I bet a lot of the new members work in the entertainment industry. So many people near my home work in the business we call show. I wish I had more connections in show business. That way, I would attend concerts for free and go to industry parties. Lots of those events have an open bar, which can be a good thing, but I am a teetotaler!

That seems fascinating. Have you worked with any celebrities? My friend saw Cameron Diaz at the WHole Foods Market in Long Beach last week, but that was just a random sighting.

I am looking for a new line of work, I currently do AR for property management. I have limited experience in the actual production side and my degree is in bussiness. I want to work in the film/tv industry specifically on the bussiness side. I would love production but I know I don't have the experience. So the question is what should I be doing to try and et into the industry?

It is all about networking and connections. If Clint Eastwood or Elliott Gould was your fifth cousin twice removed, it could be of help
