Default Toughest Act to Follow/Open Up For

Imagine, 40,000 or so screaming fans either begging for more or going insane at the prospect of the headlining act... Who would you dread opening for or following after?

I would imagine Radiohead and Tool as being tough acts to follow, much less open for. That and the Rolling Stones, purely because of their fans.

    Your thoughts?
    Upcoming Shows:
    * Dillon Francis + Anamanaguchi -- December 28th

Going to Weekend 1 of Coachella 2014

Man Man. Those guys destroy a stage. I'd hate to be the band that followed them at a festival.

radiohead fans are pretty open minded, I imagine they aren't too tough to open for.

I think Xiu Xiu would be a hard act to follow, particularly in a small venue.

Radiohead usually picks good acts to open for them so its not such a tough thing.

Man Man killed in SF last week. Killed.

I'd like to follow Man Man, but instead of playing a set, I'd just reminisce with the crowd about how much I enjoyed watching Man Man.

Brad, I think we should start the church of Man Man. It'd be like the Pentecostal, only instead of speaking in tounges, we'd sing their lyrics when possessed by the spirit of the Honus

Broken Social Scene...they only played for 45 minutes at lollapalooza...they got a 15 minute ovation at the end. The chili peppers came on and sucked it up.

I enjoy me some Tool and I enjoy me some Rage so I am not terribly biased. But at the 99 Coachella Tool followed Rage and it was just....sad. Tool put on a great show but the crowd was spent. I felt bad for them.
I like it. It's not my favorite shit in the world, but it's a smart, funny show.

    P.S. I'm gay

    I don't think this is a monkey thread. It's a valid question.

Of the shows I've seen, Tool's fans are some of the harshest on the bands that play before them. Some of them were booing Massive Attack, for fuck's sake. I'm sure the ones at Coachella '99 were more than happy for Rage Against the Machine, but I don't think too many other bands could hack the assignment of playing before them.

As for bands that would be rough to follow....well, I personally wouldn't want to follow U2 or Sigur Ros.

i wouldn't want to come after rage, the fans would be done, and probably thoroughly unimpressed.

Speaking of U2 and Rage, I wonder how it was when Rage opened for U2 during the Pop Mart Tour. All the U2 fans were probably like "wtf?!?!". One of my friends went and he was going nuts and everyone around him was sitting and staring.

Oh and At The Drive In is another.

i would say at this show the toughest acts to follow will be Arcade Fire (especially since the peppers are the one's trying it), and of the smaller bands, Tokyo Police Club - saw them on Saturday with the Cold War Kids and Delta Spirit - they stole the show - i was right by the stage so im gonna post the video of Citizens of Tomorrow i took on YouTube and will forward the link - you'll see why it'll be nearly impossible for a middle of the day band to follow them.

    Radiohead (duh)
    Sigur Ros (earth-shattering)
    Arcade Fire (you know why)
Metric (so much energy, so much sexy)
Yeah Yeah Yeahs (also full of energy and fun, upstaged the White Stripes)
    Islands (great energy)
The Dresden Dolls (always end up opening for inferior bands to ungrateful crowds)

Im sure back in the day when Metallica played huge festivals, they were not very fun to follow. Same with U2.
This year I would not want to Dj/play after Evil 9 and SoulWax..
I did see Rage open for U2 and while they sounded really good live, people were just not into it.. I really enjoyed it though..
I also heard the Darkness were a tough act to follow a few years ago.

A friend of mine went to one of the shows during the Pop Mart tour and when he got there for Rage literally half the stadium was empty; all the U2 fans just came 45 minutes late! He enjoyed it though.

I do want to challenge the notion that the Dresden Dolls always open for inferior acts... I'm sure that Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails wouldn't be considered inferior... I wish I had seen that show, though. However, both NIN and Panic! At the Disco provided really shitty crowds for the Dolls to perform for...

The Dolls do take good bands on the road with them, like the Red Paintings, so it's all good.
