Cool Coachella 2015 Weekend 1 Newbie

    Hey all

    My first post....so be gentle.......haha

So got the wife and I tickets for general admission with teepee camping for weekend 1 next year. To say I'm stoked is an understatement!!!!

Ever since Daft Punk played in 2006 it's been on my radar so decided to bite the bullet. That set gets played in my car a lot......... Fortunately, I have seen them play at Rockness festival (I'm from Scotland).....maybe again in 2015?!?!?

Anyways, we are heading over a few days before, got a hotel in Palm Springs sorted out to get over the jet lag, maybe gonna head to Vegas after...

Still deciding whether to fly into LAX, hire a car and drive or fly into Palm Springs. Been over to the states a fe times but Never and I Know LA is a nightmare. Is it an easy enough drive??? Or would I be just as well flying into Palm Springs??

Also, Teepee camping?? Anybody out there with any good reviews/tips??

Or any other info would be much appreciated.

    Cheers.

    Hi,

I have done Coachella a couple of times flying over from the UK from London,.. and West coast area for holidays half a dozen times, So here is My views and take what you like from them....

Flying to LAX gives you far more direct flights, if that is a big thing for you then its worth a thought... .... traffic well most phones these days you can use the google sat nav on them so you can get by ok...

Never flown to Palm Springs, I have looked before however the flights are always more expensive by about 150 pounds... and never direct. Plus its not far to drive from LA and the route and weather are great....

    consider

Flight to Vegas... If you are planning to go to Vegas after I would and do myself, fly to Vegas, hire a car there and drive to coachella... you can drive from there to Palm Springs where your hotel is in half a day.... Big plus points are you can drive back after Coachella and you are back to where your return flight is... Flight prices to Vegas are good much better than Palm Springs. But its really what you prefer... I fly into Vegas first for Coachella, don't need a car for 4 days then I get car and drive to the festival, via Wallmart....

As a tip I would sign up to as much as you can before you go, I joined dollar express, which means I bypass all queues for car hire I walk to the car and get in pretty much, I get the car I want every time! any of those things you can do online before all save time and waiting and stress players clubs for casino's, and those types of things... you have loads of time to plan stuff...

I am sure there are loads of other things, feel free to message me I will help where I can....

    Hey

Cheers for getting back to me. Never actually thought about flying direct to vegas and driving down. Would actually cut down on my costs especially if I were to drive back up to vegas after.

The flights I was looking at to Palm Springs were coming in at roughly what you have quoted. Doesn't bother me so much......just depends if I wanna do the drive or not......which I think I would like to do.

Loads of stuff for me to look into. Love the organising part of all of this.....my missus hates it so leaves it all to me!!

The only time I ever get to make the decisions!!

If you decide to fly into LA it is an easy drive to Palm Springs as long as it is in the morning! And not Thursday before or Friday of Coachella! I drive every year-go a few days early -the drive for me is a little over two hours- and I am about 30 minutes from the Freeway. And don't plan on driving back to anywhere on Monday after Coachella! The traffic can be a nightmare! And it is really nice to relax by the pool at a hotel to rest after the Festival. We call it Vacachella!

No, this is my first time, but from what other people say, they really take care of you there, and the shower lines are much shorter, plus they have bathroom TRAILERS with running water, not just portapotties.

They really had the getting out of the festival sorted this year for weekend 2 anyway.. was great.... I did the n00b mistake of not filling up with Gas before the festival, so had the fun of that Gas station and 500 other cars.... the freeway back to LA was slow as hell though...

I'm from Australia and 2014 was my first Coachella. I'd recommend driving up, it's pretty fun! Re: traffic, it just got really bad on the way back to LA on the Monday morning, that's about it. Everything's an experience.

the drive from Vegas to Palm Springs is a pretty nice and easy drive, 4.5 hours tops. Thats what I did last year.

The drive from San Diego is much shorter, about 2 hours and not as much traffic as LA. You may want to consider a vacachella that starts or ends in San Diego.

Flying into Palm Springs is great, but renting a car when you get there might be almost the same price as getting a taxi to and from the festival. In either case, having an extra day or two to check out the desert isn't a bad idea.

I think the suggestion of you flying into Vegas might make more sense. I know for many car rental places, there's an extra cost if you rent in one place and return it in another so starting and ending in Vegas makes sense. BUT, don't let that be the deciding factor on your vacation. San Diego is a great place to visit, LA has lots of amazing things off the beaten tourist path. You could possibly do a Southern California mini tour which would be cool. But I suppose it all depends on how much time and your budget.
