Coachella Valley-area bands may get break at 'Tachevah'

The producer of the Coachella and Stagecoach festivals is teaming with PS Resorts, the Spa Resort Casino, Harold Matzner and The Desert Sun to promote a major free concert in downtown Palm Springs between the two Coachella weekends.

Tachevah: A Palm Springs Block Party will be an open-air concert Wednesday evening, April 17 in the parking lots of the Spa Resort Casino.

The project stems from an idea by The Desert Sun to showcase emerging local musical talent. The concert will feature a headliner booked by Goldenvoice and a Goldenvoice-recommended DJ to perform between sets by three unsigned opening acts.

The selection process for the three opening bands began Thursday. Regional bands are invited to submit music videos at mydesert.com/tachevah. Those videos will be reviewed by a panel including Goldenvoice officials Paul Tollett and Skip Paige, and Desert Sun entertainment reporter Bruce Fessier. The panel will select the performers. Those artists also will be considered for subsequent Goldenvoice engagements.

“We have a great venue in the shadow of the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains and a tremendous opportunity to celebrate the creative arts in the Coachella Valley,” said Desert Sun Executive Editor Greg Burton. “We see this as the extension of a rich musical tradition in Palm Springs.”

Partners in the event expect it to become a new Palm Springs tradition.

“PS Resorts is very excited to be a partner in sponsorship with The Desert Sun, Spa Casino, Harold Matzner and Goldenvoice in participating in this new event,” said Aftab Dada, chairman of PS Resorts. “We are looking forward to growing this event and making it an annual event for years to come.”

“We are honored to allow the use of our parking lot and are working on getting several of the local restaurants to have stands to show off great food and a mixture of restaurants in downtown Palm Springs,” added Jules Vorndran, Spa Resort Casino director of marketing and player development. “We feel that the Palm Springs Block Party is going to be a great success for all the merchants and restaurants downtown and look to build the block party for years to come.”

Goldenvoice officials expect to announce the headliner and more details in coming days.

Here’s how the band submission process works:

Interested artists should submit videos by uploading them at mydesert.com/share. They may also hand-deliver or mail a DVD to The Desert Sun, Tachevah submission, 750 N. Gene Autry Trail, Palm Springs, CA 92262. The deadline for submissions is Friday, March 15.

The rules are:

• Videos must be no longer than 5 minutes.

• Videos must be free of copyright materials.

• Artists may enter up to three original videos.

• Submissions should include the band name, band member names, hometown, email address and telephone contact number.

From March 18-22, the public will have the opportunity to watch and vote on all submitted videos. The top 10 videos will be presented to the Goldenvoice/Desert Sun panel, who will choose the three bands to perform at Tachevah.

Members of the winning bands will receive free admission to Coachella, courtesy of Goldenvoice.

The final lineup will be announced Monday, March 25.

The free concert will take place from 6 to 10 p.m., April 17.

Lets start guessing who the headliner will be! It has to be a name that poeple recognize but not on top 3 lines i would think.

Tachevah announces Top 10 bands to advance to Goldenvoice, MyDesert.com judges

During the one week of voting you narrowed the field from 83 bands that submitted music videos.

The Top 10 bands, in alphabetical order:

The Top 10 bands’ videos now advance to the judges — Goldenvoice president Paul Tollett, Goldenvoice vice president Skip Paige, and MyDesert.com music guru Bruce Fessier.

Over the weekend, the judges will choose the three lucky winners.

Those three bands will score free admission to Coachella — and will perform April 17 (between Coachella weekends) in front of Goldenvoice executives, the MyDesert.com audience and you, the fans.

The party — think beer garden + live music — runs from 6 to 10 p.m. April 17 at Spa Resort Casino, 401 E. Amado Road in Palm Springs.

Tachevah, the first ever Palm Springs Block Party, is set to happen in less than 24 hours. Here’s all the crucial info you need to know to attend.

To answer one question a lot of you have been asking: Tachevah is an all ages show and admission is free. There will be two beer garden areas set up, but an ID check will be required to enter.

Please do not bring any lawn chairs, coolers, containers or other items. You will be asked to either trash them upon entry or take them back to your car.

Hooray for free concerts. I felt like I was at Coachella for a little while between Alf Alpha and Passion Pit. Excellent sound, the Heineken beer gardens..They should do this every year.

Hopefully they keep this up; bringing in even more of the smaller name bands that are playing Coachella would be cool too. I know this is really about showcasing local talent, just please, no more ska/90's rockrap or whatever that was, let Goldenvoice vote on who's to play instead of the locals.
