Thread: Best Indie Bands of 2013

Default Best Indie Bands of 2013

This is the one and only thread like this I will make. Apologies in advance for any repetition this might cause on the board.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to their favorite indie bands on the lineup? I feel like I have a good grasp of the dance (for ease, we'll call it EDM, though I know that term is a bit of a no no) side of the line up, but I'm a little lost when it comes to indie bands. It's not really my speciality but I'm trying to delve deeper into that style of music (I'm late on this train, I know).

    Thanks guys!

Thanks FEELS! You're right, indie is a super vague term, I guess that's part of my confusion haha, I'm curious to find out which bands are really considered to be "indie". I'm checking your list of bands our right now

You're welcome! haha yeah, I'd say Modest Mouse is a great example of an Indie band but i hate the word and would rather just call them a fucking great band. If you're curious, much of those bands I listed have a little write-up on them + accompanying videos of some of their best songs in the "educate us on the 2013 lineup" thread. It's in the music lounge. You should check it out. Cheers!

Yeah Modest Mouse definitely pops into my head when I think of Indie music. Funny how the really broad genre terms like EDM and Indie etc just get annoying once you really start digging into the music. Thanks again, I'll pop over to that thread ASAP

I suppose I should have specified how I was using the term "indie". I am not very knowledgable about this genre, but I believe you are correct by pointing out that indie probably first referred to artists who released their music on smaller, low budget, independent labels. However, I think it's safe to say that a lot of those bands climb past their low budget standards, but still remain in the genre of "indie" music. So there has been a bit of a change in what the word "indie" really means in the music world.

Indie rock is a genre of alternative rock that originated in the United Kingdom and the United States in the 1980s. Indie rock is extremely diverse, with sub-genres that include indie pop, jangle pop, C86, and lo-fi, among others. Originally used to describe record labels, the term became associated with the music they produced and was initially used interchangeably with alternative rock. As grunge and punk revival bands in the US, and then Britpop bands in the UK, broke into the mainstream in the 1990s, it came to be used to identify those acts that retained an outsider and underground perspective. In the 2000s, as a result of changes in the music industry and the growing importance of the Internet, a number of indie rock acts began to enjoy commercial success, leading to questions about its meaningfulness as a term.

Hi FEELS, I'm from Palm Desert too! Live in LA now

Foals is not boring, I saw them at Coachella in 2011 and it was one of my favorite sets that weekend. Didn't know what to expect since I "discovered" them while researching the line-up that year, but it was a dance party and they jam out. They are on my "do not miss" list for this year. Highly recommend seeing them!

nice list I also recommend checking out:
    Dead Can Dance
    Reignwolf
    Tanlines
    DIIV
    Metric
    Alt-J
    Local Natives

My top 'indie acts' acts for 2013 are:
    1. Dead Can Dance (trippy world fusion music. Honestly these guys will blow your mind)
2.Sigur Ros (Saw them at osl, and they were incredibly powerful. Prepare to be overwhelmed by an array of emotions at their set... If I were to recommend a place to start getting familiar with their catalogue, I'd say its Agaetis Byrjun. Listen to this album in its entirety... its a masterpiece)
    3. Grizzly Bear (Another band with a powerful sound, I've never seen them live but im extremely excited. These guys have more rock elements to their sound as compared to the bands named above)
    4. DIIV (These dudes epitomize indie rock. Very melodic guitar riffs. Sounds like beach town music)
    5. Blur/ Roses (Blur has 3 elite tracks, Tender, the Universal, and Coffee & TV- As for the roses, all their tracks are elite. Fools Gold and The Ressurection are most noteworthy)
    6. Tame Impala (When these dudes take the stage your consciousness will be transposed back to the 1960s. They are a vintage psychedelic rock band)
    7. FOALS (if you dig FOALS, then your an indie rock fan)
    8. Two Door Cinema Club (hella catchysongs with decent guitar work. Extremely excited for their set)
9.Metric (They have a chick singer and they create a great atmosphere. Apparently they killed it last time they played coachella)
    10. Yeasayer (Check these guys out. SO many different sounds. They push their musical creativity with every track they come out with. So pumped to see them)

Yeah, I saw Youth Lagoon in a small club in Orlando last spring and it was great, but I'd imagine they'll translate pretty poorly at a festival.

Youth Lagoon was really good at Capitol Hill Block Party in Seattle last summer. I expected to be bored, but it was very entertaining.

Not sure...I've seen it presented both ways, but Coachella has it in all caps so that is what I've been going with. DIIV on the other hand, I have only seen in all caps.
