Default How to handle the canopy situation flying in from NY

Does anyone have any ideas on how to handle the shade/canopy flying into LA Thursday morning?

I've seen the Coleman 10x10 canopy with LED lights mentioned by a few people, but its a full 44 pounds by itself.

We have 2 50 lb carry on bags available to us to fill with equipment.

    My idea is the following:

    Use this tent: http://www.amazon.com/Kelty-Trail-Ri...=4+person+tent

Rent a non-SUV car in LA

Duct tape Mylar Emergency blankets (which reflect heat) to a tarp, which is put up by 2 poles in the center and attached (probably by duct tape) to our tent and car (both about 5 ft high)

Use rope and stakes to keep it all locked down

Anyone have any criticism/ideas for 2 people flying in and trying to carry 100 lbs of gear?

    Thanks.

That might work but I would at least wait until you got to LAX if you are renting a car then buy your tent local. ? your title of the thread, are you asking though about a canopy or tent etc......cr****

yeah, it'll be much cheaper to buy one once you've landed and just leave it for someone to poach as they're leaving the grounds. you can probably buy another canopy when you get home and still save money.

I guess if I could tote 100 lbs of stuff, I would take advantage of it. Just makes you not be be extremely mobile at LAX but it sounds like you are going to deal with that anyway. I've done without a canopy but it makes things a lot better with one. They are less than $100 at Costco. They weigh a ton though so no on the airplane. Your idea is cheaper and easier though. You never know what the weather is going to be like but chances are hot. cr****

Just buy a cheap one at the nearby Walmart for about the same price you would pay for the extra baggage fees w/o the extra travel hassles. Then you can sell it to someone on Sunday/Mon AM or just leave it...The wind at night usually does a number on all the canopies anyways. You don't want to bring your best top dollar canopy to chella...

Emergency Blankets will blow away if you attach them to a tarp. It won't matter how you attach them. Harbor Freight sells silver metallic tarps that reflect the sun perfectly. They come in various sizes. Get some bungees with the ball on them & loop them through the tarp holes to rig them to the popup frame for side walls. Some durable larger zip ties may come in handy also.
