Default Kurt Vile and the Violators

What the fuck is Kurt doing so low on the poster in such teeny-weeny font size? Regardless, I'm glad he got moved from Saturday to the less-stacked bill for Sunday. With a new album due in the spring, I imagine we can expect to hear some new tunes.

For those unfamiliar, check out these cuts from his past few releases: So Outta Reach EP (2011), Smoke Ring for My Halo (one of 2011's most widely acclaimed albums), and God Is Saying This To You? (2010).

This is going to feel good in the desert.

One of the best shows I saw last year. Definitely will not miss.

Miroir Noir posted the new single in another thread but posting it here as well. Was already planning on seeing this but is quickly becomming one of my more anticipated sets. Looking forward to the album.

On the Coachella lineup it just says "Kurt Vile" but on the Primavera Sound lineup it says "Kurt Vile and The Violators"

Should this be noted? Are the names interchangeable? I would assume his band will be with him at Coachella.

They changed it to "And The Violators" the day after the line up was announced.

And it just hit me that Kurt is like the perfect blend of Bob Dylan and J Mascis. I mean, he's completely his own person as a great musician, but I do get that vibe from him.

The Dylan/Mascis combo is actually a pretty apt description.

Man, "Wakin on a Pretty Day" has quickly become one of my favorite things he's done. Earns every second of its 9+ min. length.

Does anyone else think Childish Prodigy should have been just as acclaimed as Smoke Ring?

    What a fucking great record.

No, despite the fact that I love Childish Prodigy. It's probably a better-played album, but the songs on Smoke Ring are just so solid on every level, from performance to lyrics to arrangement to production. And it holds together so well as a piece.

Definitely agree on those points about Smoke Ring but I think Childish is sequenced and stuff just as well, maybe the production is inferior. I mean, all the songs are so great and especially Dead Alive>Overnite Religion>Freak Train. What a 123 punch to the gut. Then Monkey>Heart Attack. Different strokes for different folks I guess. I know one thing we can agree on is the 6.3 from Pitchfork. They blew it on that rating

KV leapfrogs from the 7th to 4th line on the lineup poster for Sunday. And just like that, my dismay in the OP is answered.

Grantland/Pitchfork writer Steven Hyden reviews Wakin on a Pretty Daze. No P4k-style rating, but Hyden has largely positive things to say. I haven't listened to the stream yet, but I need to get on that shit. Here's the takeaway:

"On Wakin, Vile has taken his affecting fumbling one step forward into full-on musical expressionism. Heís elongated his ellipses as far as they can go, and filled them with squiggles of haze and acres of wide-open space. Itís probably as close to experiencing what the world is like inside Vileís head next to actually being Kurt Vile."

3:55-4:45 Outdoor Theatre -- this I can get behind. KV's at the top of his game and popularity and even with the inevitable Grimes clusterfuck nextdoor, this one has potential.

I accidentally heard this guy while waiting in line at the merch tent at Bonnaroo, love his whole lackadaisical vibe. Seeing this is a no brainer, not trying to see anyone else in their slot anyway
