They should have headlined in the Mojave and let How to Destroy Angels close out on that crappy main stage.
    Whiskey Sour

    2 oz blended whiskey
    Juice of 1/2 lemon
    1/2 tsp powdered sugar
    1 cherry
    1/2 slice lemon

Shake blended whiskey, juice of lemon, and powdered sugar with ice and strain into a whiskey sour glass. Decorate with the half-slice of lemon, top with the cherry, and serve.

They were fucking incredible last night. Seriously the highlight of the evening. Played everything I wanted to hear aside from skipping Mersey Paradise. Visuals were superb as well. Everyone around was singing, smiling, dancing, hands in the air, enjoying the hell out of themselves, which was great to see at such a late hour.

While everyone else was off listening to shit that will be forgotten by morning, those that caught the only US performance from The Stone Roses will have that memory for a lifetime.
I agree with this. I knew Ian was going to sing off-key, and he did, but the rest of the band killed it, I mean KILLED IT. And yeah, Ian did mutter a couple "fuck you's" because he's kind of an asshole rockstar, but that's part of why I like them. The crowd was pitiful in size, but those of us up front were dancing and singing along joyously. I'm so glad I finally got to see them.

This was just...bad. They should have played in the Violent Femmes time slot (a band that sounded 50x better than the Stone Roses, btw) or another stage. LOL @ the Ian Brown apologists. Watching the YouTube vids, and the vocals are shitty and inexcusable. They must be bummed to do Coachella a second time. There was literally more trash on the ground than people (I watched them play the first 2 songs).

There is no "should have". The only way they would play was as a co-headline with blur. Doubt even GV was expecting them to have 10's of thousands of people watching their set.

What an absolute embarrassment for everyone involved. Golden Voice look like fucking idiots for ridiculously overestimating the demand for an underwhelming washed up nostalgia act. Ian Brown was an angry cunt, saying fuck you to the crowd and generally acting like the pissed off little troll he is. At one point he looked out at the tiny crowd and said "You have any requests? Fuck you, we don't take requests."

Some hilarious responses in this thread though. I have no idea if there were 5,000 people at that set when it started, but when I wandered by at 12:30a, there might have been 1000-1500 at best. You could walk straight up to the rail with zero resistance, and the crowd didn't even go 1/4 of the way to the soundboard. After songs ended, it was mostly silence and maybe a few polite golf claps.

I have to say I absolutely loved the entire scene. The fact that the egotistical hobbit got a taste of exactly what kind of obscure nothing he still is in the states was delicious. His pouting and stomping around the stage and cursing at the crowd in response was a perfect example of his douchiness.

Blur's crowd was small as well but at least they proved they can put on a respectable show and Damon Albarn possesses talent. Not so for the monotone dwarf and his band of boring assholes.

I'd highly encourage everyone going to Wk2 to go check it out for at least 10-15 mins just to get an idea of exactly how pathetic and sorry the whole spectacle is. I'm guessing Brown will be an even bigger dick when he has to slog through a second humiliation of playing a set in front of a crowd more suited for a junior high xmas play.

I have no interest in seeing The Stone Roses, but I have nothing against them either. However, I really enjoyed reading this scathing review. I read it with a British accent. Thank you.

My girlfriend and I left the midnight set we were at in a tent around 12:15 because she wasn't feeling good and wanted to see something where she had more room. I was actually secretly excited because I wanted to see The Stone Roses instead of the set we were at anyway. We went to main stage and had all the space we needed.

We both felt very uncomfortable with everything going on at the set - the emptiness, the band acting like they didn't care, the silence in between songs, etc. and left about 15 minutes later.

Other than the sand storm Sunday night (which was obviously beyond GV's control), this was the one damper on an amazing weekend, and this one was controllable.

I really have no idea what Goldenvoice was going for here both in terms of the headlining booking and set time. I don't think I'll ever understand it.

Pretty much nailed it and if its true that the Roses refused to play unless they had a headlining slot then they are bigger wankers then I previously thought. I definitely would have enjoyed a 7 pm mainstage set by them but evidently they think they are too big for such a pedestrian time slot.

Finally some reviews about what really happened. I was curious about the positive things being said after the first few posts after the show.

I have never been so close to the stage in my life at Coachella. Lumineers must have had 60 times as many people. I had like 10 feet of space to me on either side of the railing by the end. We were debating whether it was "fuck you" or "thank you." At the time I thought thank you.

At the time I thought he was singing out of key on purpose cause of the entire spectacle of it all.

60 times as many? So if there were 2000 people at the Roses there were 120,000 at Lumineers?

At the end of the night I walked around and checked out all the stages and the Stone Roses easily had the smallest crowd. Even smaller than Tegan and Sara. It was pretty brutal.

Consider Lumineers people were back to the A7 (farthest post) and Stone Roses could be at front railing with no one near you. Possibly.

This is in the front section on the right side. I took this about 3 songs in.

I heard the singer was saying "fuck you" in between songs.

What a piece of shit if true. That fucker shouldn't be up on that stage in the first place.

i just dont understand how you can listen to 95% of your ticket-buying audience say in unison "who the fuck are the stone roses!?", and even have MEDIA COVERAGE with headlines like "coachella fans confused about identity of headlining acts" etc. and not go "wait a sec..." so dumb.

I really, really, wanted to like this set. We took a break after Blur (who's performance we loved) and then returned to the main stage about three songs in for The Stone Roses, and the crowd was embarrassingly small. I felt really bad for the band, and it was so uncomfortable watching them that we left to check out the other stages. I'm really curious about what's going to happen next weekend, because if I were Ian I would not want to struggle through another whole humiliating set in front of a crowd that doesn't care. We were all thinking it, but now we know it's true; Golden Voice needs to target the younger demographic to make Coachella work, at least for the headliners.

this brings up a crazy crowd dynamic that has always fascinated me: "this is so brutal for the band that i actually dont care about the music anymore and want to leave. i dont want to be a part of this"

    pretty funny.

The only set I saw with less people than The Stone Roses, was Grinderman. I was actually amazed at how desolate Stone Roses were after reading all the people on this board who were so excited to see them. What a pathetic set.

I'm a little confused about some of you talking about a small crowd. We tried to get as close as we could and ended up on the left of the stage close to the barrier that divides the crowd into sections. There were thousands of people all around, as far as the lights would project. The band members were tiny, and I remember being pissed that we couldn't get closer to see better, so I don't think the crowd estimates are accurate at all. I actually fell over the barrier thing trying to see better. They escorted me back around, and I again couldn't get very close. My friends there were saying the same, and wished we got further up. I think there is some major (I told ya so) bias from Stone Roses haters and such, so that is to be expected on their crowd count for this. Anyway, I really wish SR would have played Outdoor Stage/ Theater. The sound and view is much better over there. And then maybe all the people that got so mad that their favorite "pop" act wasn't closing would have not been so fucking negative about it. One thing for sure, gonna be sure to make it up front for the Roses for weekend 2. And will love it no matter how many naysayers or crybabies wanna bitch about it. Cheers to ya!

Yeah, WHAT THE FUCK, people?? I was at Stone Roses and enjoyed myself so much that if I do end up going to weekend 2 somehow, I would go see them again even if HTDA or Purity Ring play at the same time. Actually HTDA would probably conflict with Blur next weekend, but STILL.
