J Mascis is undoubtedly one of the best guitar players ever and a true virtuoso. I have never heard anyone rip such beautiful melodic solos with so much ease.
Composition wise I would say Marr is one of the best as well. His total body of work might be a little stronger and he is a little more versatile.
I dunno, it's kind of a toss up to me. But I expect Mascis to put on a better live performance.
Jake from JEFF The Brotherhood is the best 3 string guitar player on the lineup.

Squire of Stone Roses - like Best possible combination. Of Hendrix and Roger McGuinn
No, because that's simply technical playing. J. can play technically but also with nuance and beauty. Marr can't make his guitar sing the way Mascis can, even if he writes some fantastic songs. He's more the Edge approach: tone, riffs and attention to detail.

In July 2007, Fender released the J Mascis signature Jazzmaster, in honour of the Dinosaur Jr frontman. This model is much the same as previous Jazzmaster models aside from its J Mascis bridge (the Fender equivalent of the Gibson Tune-o-matic bridge), and its unusual purple sparkle finish. It is currently the only model of Jazzmaster in production with a matching headstock.

Anyone else belong in that group?
Mascis and Marr deserve better than this shitty thread. They are miles apart stylistically so they do not deserve comparison. They both are the Great Coachella 2013 Guitar Gods.
EDIT: The VU is one of my top 5 all time favorite bands. Dinosaur Jr and The Smiths do not even go in the Top 20 for me. But when you compare the overall body of work of the 3 on the guitar alone Reed doesn't top those guys.
