Huell Howser--a California broadcasting legend for his various shows that have appeared on public broadcasting over the past couple of decades--has died, according to sources who spoke to the Weekly on condition of anonymity.

The news will come as a shock to his legions of fans, all who were puzzled when Howser announced his retirement late last year, as Howser still seemed to have the enthusiasm and energy that made him so easy to parody--and so beloved to millions of Californians.

In the past couple of years, Howser has forged a connection with Chapman University, donating all his papers and videos of his shows and even a house he owned out in the desert.

Details of his passing are currently unknown. More--much more--as more information arises...

Damn, RIP. Had a great, long conversation with him at Coachella 2009, was always hoping he would return and do another piece on the festival. Much of our chat was about the festival, with him asking me numerous questions and me sitting there with the only thing going through my mind being "Holy shit I am sitting here talking to Huell fucking Howser"!

Fuck man that is terrible news. When he stopped the show some rumors spread about it being due to his poor health and I guess they were right

Oh, man... we just watched him do a show on the In n' Out Burger Empire and reflected back on his enthusiasm for Coachella... RIP Huell... May your endless enthusiasm shine down on us from the Heavens...

Of all the rain discussed while I've been a member of this board, this one is the saddest of all. Rest in peace, Huell.

He did a show on my uncle's bakery in East L.A. once. My cousin had nothing but great things to say about him. RIP
You know, but that's valid because if we are all gonna die anyway shouldn't we be enjoying ourselves now? You know, I'd like to quit thinking of the present, like right now, as some minor insignificant preamble to something else.

i also got to run into Huell in 2009. i was running through the VIP area to meet Dani on the back road to take some pictures and stopped dead in my tracks and yelled "NO WAY! Huell!" He extended his hand and said "HI! Nice to meet you! Who are you shooting for?" Super nice as could be. i think this was the most excited i ever got meeting a celebrity. i just have memories of him going way back. Watching this weird show and being amazed i liked it so much. This man was a wonderful broadcaster who brought great purpose to his job. He showed us so many cool things about California and created much desire to visit them all. Huell will never be replaced.

Always uttered the finest and most earnest "Wow" on TV...If I still smoked California's gold, I'd throw one up in the air for you Huell.

I just watched an episode where he marveled at the creation of the Chicharrones.

    Here's another article..

Huell Howser, 'California's Gold' TV host, dead at 67

    1:48 PM, Jan 7, 2013 - The Desert Sun
Written by Staff and wire reports

California TV legend Huell Howser is dead at 67. Traci Brown, with member services at KCET, confirmed that the veteran broadcaster died early Monday morning.

Howser, host of the public television shows “California's Gold” and “Road Trip with Huell Howser,” had homes in both Twentynine Palms and Palm Springs.

According to the Riverside County Coroner’s Office, Howser died at 2:35 a.m. in Palm Springs of natural causes.

The outpouring online was immediate as fans and colleagues heard about the death.

“R.I.P Huell #Howser , you would make the most mundane thing seem to be #amazing Even the people you interviewed seemed bored BUT NOT YOU,” wrote one fan on Twitter.

Howser started his television career at WSM in Nashville after graduating from the University of Tennessee, working for a United States senator and serving in the Marine Corps. He hosted a magazine-style series at WCBS in New York City before moving to Los Angeles in 1981 to work as a reporter for CBS2, according to his website.

He joined public television station KCET in 1987 to produce “Videolog,” short programs featuring people's unique stories. The series later expanded to people and places throughout California.

Howser quietly retired from ``California's Gold'' late last year, amid rumors about his failing health. His assistant, Ryan Morris, told the Los Angeles Times in November that Howser was retiring from filming new shows, saying he ``is just trying to get away from television and enjoy some free time.''
