It’s an injustice that we respectfully mourn notable deaths of celebrities and artists in great detail in our ‘raining’ threads, but when a mass tragedy occurs, we clutter the discussion with politics and arguments that are no different today than they were yesterday. It’d be nice to move that discussion here, where those who want to see and discuss those arguments can. And hopefully the threads of the tragedy itself can be a place to respect and mourn.

we hear this every time a tragedy that could/should have been preventable happens. "this isn't the right time". yes it is, it's absolutely the time to have a national conversation about this. it's a topic that is quickly (and wrongfully) becoming the 3rd rail in American politics now that neither side lists gun control as a major party platform.

whatever. I'll just post this here.

Marijuana has a better chance of becoming legalized nationwide before more gun control happens.

You pass another amendment repealing the target amendment. 21 repealed 18. 28 can repeal 2. Yes I know this is a pipe dream. That doesn't make it any less the correct answer.

I am not saying "do away with all guns". I am saying do away with treating gun ownership a right. If driving a car is a privilege then so should gun use, possession, and ownership be. WHEN DRIVING A CAR IS A CRIME ONLY CRIMINALS WILL DRIVE CARS.

    Ok, 2nd amendment reads:
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

With what language would you amend this law so to make guns a privilege and not a right, while at the same time guaranteeing their legality? Bryan? Message Board?

I'd do away with it. We don't need a militia, seeing as how the founding fathers envisioned us keeping a people's militia rather than a standing army. And the argument that individual gun ownership protects against tyranny is crap: do you think that any of the people who believe that would be able to fight against the largest, most well-equipped army in the world if they actually felt that they were going to resort to systematic, militaristic tyranny against the populace?

Gun ownership, like ownership of every other non-essential item in the world, should be a privilege and not a right.

Eh, no matter how many kids get shot I can't shake the feeling that sometime relatively soon all those automatic weapons might come in REAL handy.

It would be intellectually dishonest to equate the NRA's push for automatic weapons and deregulation with the brilliant, pragmatic language of our constitution.

I say we remove pencil sharpeners from schools. I know people who have stabbed others with sharp tipped pencils. And without guns, it's only a matter of time before sharpened pencils become the weapon of choice.

If these children would've been trained properly and allowed their conceal and carry this never would've happened.

While I do not believe we should take away all guns, there's definately a problem when it's perfectly legal in most places to go buy an AR-15. Thanks, NRA!

You're right we should all be prepared. How naive I am to think I am safe walking around the streets of any neighborhood especially my own, I need to ask santa for some kevlar, a nine, a holster and a permit.

Having lived with guns in the house and without guns in the house, I can tell you one thing: I didn't feel any more safe with them in the house than I do without.

regardless of whether he had a gun or not this guy was looking to do some kind of damage. if a gun wasn't available he would've used a knife or something else. The real issue should be finding a way to deal with these psychopaths because this is going to happen again guns or not.

Literally all you have to do to negate this argument is look at the school in China today, where a man went on a stabbing spree and 20 children were INJURED. Not killed, injured. A horrible tragedy there, yes, but they didn't die.

Yes he would have stabbed 30 people to death just as easily as he shot them with an automatic weapon. Good point.

Yes and we all have the same military training and ability to figure out exactly how to do what Timothy McVeigh did. Right?

Yes Thermite bomb building will become an epidemic if we create gun restrictions. These are all very intelligent arguments guys. I'm glad I stopped in for a bit. Keep em' coming.

Thermite isnt a bomb, it would be very difficult to kill a large number of people with thermte unless you were doing structural damage.

I think our society is in limbo with guns rights and gun control and it creates the worst kind of situation. We have a society with acess to guns but an overwhelming stigma associated with them. We allow some to arm themselves while the general public has never touched or fired a gun. This creates a situation where guns are even more powerfull. We should either arms our citizens and treach them to bear arms responsibly, or we should outlaw pistols and semi automatic rifles.

Right now we are in the middle and the middle is a breadin ground for psychopaths that wield far too much power compared to the average unarmed american.
