Default It's raining kids in Connecticut

    http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2012...cial-says?lite

Updated at 1 p.m. ET: Twenty-six people were killed, including 18 children, when a gunman opened fire in a Connecticut elementary school Friday morning, a law enforcement official said.
The gunman, who is dead, was a 20-year-old from Connecticut, an official said. He was wearing all black and was carrying two 9mm handguns. Another person was being held by police and questioned, an official said.
The incident -- the second deadliest school shooting in U.S. history after a gunman killed 32 people at Virginia Tech in 2007 -- sent crying children spilling into the school parking lot as frightened parents waited for word on their loved ones.
"I was in the gym and I heard a loud, like seven loud booms, and the gym teachers told us to go in the corner, so we all huddled," one student at the K-4th grade Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown told NBC Connecticut during its live broadcast. "And I kept hearing these booming noises. And we all … started crying.
"All the gym teachers told us to go into the office where no one could find us," she added. "So then a police officer came in and told us to run outside. So we did and we came in the firehouse and waited for our parents."
Three people were taken to nearby Danbury Hospital, a spokeswoman told NBC Connecticut. She would not elaborate on the ages of the victims or their conditions.
One of those taken to the hospital was a teacher who had been shot in the foot, the Associated Press reported, citing a dispatcher at the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
President Obama was notified about the shooting and continues to receive updates, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said.
"I think it's important on a day like today to view this as I know the president, as a father does, and I as a father and others who are parents certainly do," Carney said at his daily briefing. "Which is to feel enormous sympathy for families that are affected."

In a photo taken by the Newtown Bee, crying students could be seen being escorted from the school by police. They were taken to a nearby fire station where their parents were picking them up.
A third-grader, Alexis Wasik, told the Hartford Courant that police checked students and staffers before they were escorted to the fire station.
"We had to walk with a partner," she said.
NBC Connecticut reported that the entire school district was in lockdown.
At Sandy Hook, police, ATF and FBI agents were going room to room searching the school.

Newtown is about 45 miles southwest of Hartford and 60 miles northeast of New York City.
The K-4 school has about 600 students.

I completely agree. I read two different articles, one said that there were 25 dead and another said only 2 were confirmed. WTF is wrong with this world?

Either way, 1 is 1 too many. I read in one of those article that the principal and school psychologist were killed. This was just days after the shooting in OR. Just horrible.

This argument makes me SO fucking mad. The problem isn't guns! It is the asshats who use them. Do you really think that if we outlaw them that this DBAG wouldn't have been able to find one somewhere.

Drugs are illegal, people still do them. What is your argument on that?

people who abuse drugs are primarily hurting themselves. people who abuse guns tend to hurt a whole lot more people.

Interesting excerpt from a journal article I'm reading this morning...

"Countries with less stringent gun control laws have been observed to have a higher
risk of mass murder than countries with stricter laws. Although it is clear that gun
control in the United States remains a tenacious and controversial issue, other countries
have had some success pursuing this area. For example, an Australian observational
study compared mass murders before and after 1996, the year of a widely
publicized mass murder in Tasmania. Australia quickly enacted gun law reforms
that included removing semiautomatic firearms, pump-action shotguns, and rifles
from civilian possession. Results of the study revealed that in the 18 years before
the gun laws, there were 13 mass shootings in Australia. In the 10.5 years after the
gun law reforms, there were none. Although comparing firearm laws among countries
may make drawing firm conclusions difficult, currently available data suggest that
mass tragedies occur with less frequency in countries with stricter gun control laws."

There have been 31 U.S. school shootings since Columbine. There have been 14 in every other country in the world combined. Do you know how sad that is? Good Ol' USA, home of the most lax gun laws in the world

My "favorite" argument that I hear on message boards/comment sections:

"You can kill someone with a frying pan and a car. Does that mean we should ban those too?"

End of story. And anyone who continues to defend this needs to get their shit straight.

It is sad, very much so, but you are not understanding the argument here! It is the people, not the guns. Just because something is illegal doesn't mean you can't get it! I hope you are just trolling because that might be one of the more retarded statements I have ever heard. I am not getting into this anymore.

Both guns and mental health are issues here, not just one or the other. You could just as easily argue that if something was illegal (in this case, a gun) it's alot harder to get. Maybe in some cases impossible.

There's no perfect answer to this ordeal, and there probably never will be.

And that's all I'm going to say about this. Not taking a side, just don't want to go back and forth in the same debate that's been going on since... well, forever.

Sorry, my friend, many, if not all countries in the world have their own contingent of people with mental issues. But unlike in the United States, they do not have (relatively) easy access to legally or illegally acquired guns.

Not everyone who is a mass murderer has a mental illness. One study investigating young adult mass murderers revealed that only 23% had had a lifetime diagnosis of a mental illness, and only 6% were psychotic at the time of the incident. Its easy to suggest that someone who would do something so horrible must be "mentally ill", but just because we can't relate or understand why a person did what they did does not make them mentally ill. And suggesting this only perpetuates stigma against the mentally ill.

You have a very narrow and useless definition of "mentally ill".
Mass-murder is undoubtedly the most obvious sign of a sociopath. It's kind of hilarious that you would dismiss mental illness. Even if it was a momentary loss of faculties, it's still bad wiring.

If the default mental state is "don't kill people" (and it is, whether you believe it's taught by evolution or god) then someone who doesn't prescribe to that philosophy is mentally ill, regardless of whether the particular symptoms he displays match some clinical definition of an identified mental illness.

The brain is not fully defined by some text book.

If you're worried about a stigma against traditional mental-illness, or vague ones like schizophrenia. Well sorry bro, it's gonna happen. If the stigma you're worried about is that even a mildly mentally ill person has a harder time getting a gun. Well that's just life. Sometimes the lot you drew isn't cosmically fair, but for everyone's safety there have to be some obvious rules.

Would you worry about a stigma against legally blind people that prevented them from getting a drivers license?

I subscribe to the technical, medical and scientific definition of "mentally ill", as described by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders, rather than the definition created and perpetuated by mass media and ignorance.

Mass-murder can be a "symptom" of sociopathy/psychopathy, but its by no means required. Psychopathy is defined by a lack of empathy, lack of remorse, shallow affect, superficial charm, manipulativeness... yes, some psychopaths murder others. Some dont. Some non-psychopaths murder as well.

My concern has nothing to do with mildly mentally ill people and their access to guns. My concern is with perpetuating the stigma that only mentally ill people could possibly do these types of horrible things... because it is wholly untrue. "Faulty wiring" is not synonymous with "mental illness".

Joking? Better restrictions on guns might be a start.

Perhaps removing them from the hands of mentally unstable individuals would be the next.

Or, the easiest solution of all: repeal the fucking 2nd amendment. This shit ONLY happened because some dumb fucking kid had a gun and a bad day. Could be anyone. Easy problem to solve but some backwoods hick cousinfuckers still seem to think owning a gun is completely necessary. The problem here is that our country is overrun by morons. The solution is clearly to disarm those morons.

Sorry if that seemed like I was arguing with you. It's just that, yes, there is a very obvious perfect answer. Nobody will admit it though, if it threatens their "right" to bear arms. Fucking stupid. Nobody should be able to own something for which the only use is to kill.
    LOL! <33
