I'll be adding to this later, but favorite songs of the year:

    St. Vincent - "Surgeon"
Fucked Up - "Queen of Hearts"
    Cults - "Abducted"
    Prurient - "Palm Tree Corpse"
We're here to play some Mississippi Delta Blues. We're in a horrible depression, and I gotta admit - we're starting to like it.

I love Wilco more than just about anybody, but if The Whole Love is one of the 10 best albums of 2011, then 2011 sucked.

These will all definitely be near the top of my list. These albums and Father, Son, Holy Ghost reminded me how exciting and beautiful the guitar, bass, and drums American singer/songwriter tradition can still be.

So what's the consensus on live albums and tracks? What about songs that appear on live albums that have no studio counterpart?

I don't know that we've really tallied up people's year-end lists like that...but not that we couldn't. these threads generally are for recommendations, comparison, discussion, and shouting matches.

I'd say the only things that you shouldn't count are compilations of previously released material, or reissues. The Smile Sessions are a unique problem. Personally, I wouldn't call it a 2011 album any more than I would have called Springsteen's The Promise a 2010 album last year, but I think there are plenty of legit arguments on the other side.

That's a long way of saying that live albums should count.

We've tallied before. I just think anything should be fair game. List one live album and a single won't affect an official board list.

Really? I thought The Whole Love was their best album since A Ghost Is Born. It takes the best aspects of their old sound and fuses it into the style they have had on Sky Blue Sky and Wilco (The Album). But to each their own, although you have to admit Art of Almost is one of the best Songs of the year.
