Yeah, there's nothing really "brolectro" about this album. Its' more like...rhythmic drone? Is that a thing?

Again? When else recently have I been way off base? But yeah, I did only listen to one song so I suppose I should give the whole thing a fair spin. Just a kneejerk reaction.

I'd definitely say they are about as far away from bro culture as you can get. Their last few tours have been with the likes of Savages, Wire and Goat.

Laurel Halo's "Chance of Rain" is possibly the best thing I've heard all year. It's got the beautiful, strangely airy textures of the last LP, but in a frantic, driving IDM style. A perfect combination between her recent EP (which honestly I didn't much like) and her last LP. It is staggeringly great.

The Cool Ghouls - s/t is great. Warm, fuzzy San Francisco garage/psych rock. They recorded with Sonny Smith recently, too.

Kiev's new album is really good and I plan to pick it up next time they're in OC. To me it sounds like more organic 00's Radiohead but there's probably more apt comparisons. Whatever it is, wouldn't mind seeing them opening the Gobi or Mojave next spring.

In theklein's department, AFI's latest is surprisingly solid. About as 'mature' a record as they'll make and the least whiny vocals in over a decade.

Super quick thoughts , most of these based on 1 listen -

Sleigh Bells - Bitter Rivals is completely horrible.

Russian Circles - Memorial is great and heavy as fuck

Poliša - Shulasmith is better than the first album - more fast-paced songs and more range overall

Glasser - Interiors is great, and despite not being as impressed with the live show for this album, it might be a better album than the first.

Pearl Jam - Lightning Bolt has nothing "wrong" with it, it's a solid rock album, but by the middle of it it starts to all sound the same and just isn't very interesting.
"Sirens" is an excellent single though and I like what Eddie is doing with his voice on it

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. - The Speed Of Things is a great bouncy summery album that has a surprisingly amount of variety and depth to it.

I'm kind of late to the party, but the latest Kurt Vile record is great. I've always been more of a War on Drugs fan, but I think that might change. Also, I'm surprised at how much I liked Amok by Atoms for Peace. I didn't like The Eraser and generally am not a fan of any non-Radiohead Thom Yorke projects.

Windhand's Soma is incredible. It's a sort of mix of the drone guitar from Sunn O))) with Sleep's percussion (although neither comparison is completely accurate). Cassock, the second to last track, already had me completely wowed over the album but then came Boleskine, the 30-minute closing track. Insanely good. One of the better releases of this year, from any genre.

Zonoscope was fucking terrible. If anything, I'm hoping this new one will be a redemption album.

I bought Zonoscope on vinyl, only spun it once. I remember the last track is like 15 minutes. The lead single wasn't bad, sounded kinda Tears For Fears-ish if I recall.

But this, this is the Cut Copy I remember.

Zonoscope had Where I'm Going, which is still the best song they've recorded. I've not heard the new one, but there's little chance they'll reach that level again.

Each of Cut Copy's four albums has had a distinct sound of its own. Similar palate, sure, but each one has very much been its own thing. I loved Zonoscope. Top ten for 2011 for me. Give it another shot.

Free Your Mind though, is amazing. Love it to pieces so far. Sad to admit it, but I moved Reflektor to the backburner for this one.

No leaks up yet, but they put up a streaming widget that's on all of the usual websites.

Halfway through the stream so far and I am enjoying it immensely, though it's probably my least favorite of theirs upon first listen. I will surely be listening a lot though.

EDIT: This material is going to be bonkers live though

EDIT 2: Nearly done with the album and I have to say that I now feel much more enthusiastic about it. This is a great record.

Of their albums, this is the one where the obvious influences are farthest away from my personal critical sweetspots. No Fleetwood Mac hooks here, and it's Technique New Order instead of Low-Life. But it has still been such a blast listening to it.

There is much more of a straight up house influence on this that I'm really noticing as I get in the last 1/4 of the album, possibly through the really heavy use of samples.

They're huge fans; Dan said he was heavily influenced by Tusk in writing the last album. I could point you to examples of it on each album, but just go back and re-listen to "Take Me Over," which reappropriates the synth melody of "Everywhere" wholesale.

Exactly. I really love Everywhere, and they reappropriated that synth line enough that it was an obvious influence without seeming like a straight up copy of it.
