I realize I'm the resident fun hater, but I think it's hilarious when people act like fun = quality. Sure, there are a lot of things in this world that are both fun and great, but there's also a whole hell of a lot that is fun but really, really sucks. (I haven't heard the Haim album yet fwiw).

My argument in favor of Haim would not be merely that they are fun or enjoyable to listen to (though I do think they are), but rather that they have made a bunch of exceptionally well-crafted pop songs. At some level, I think a lot of us -- and I include myself in this -- tend to have an unconscious bias against music that's not particularly difficult. A common critical failing is to think writing a well-crafted, hook-filled pop song that's easy to listen to is somehow easy to make. It's actually quite difficult. It's one reason why I've developed a pretty heavy appreciation for Phoenix over the last few years; going in and picking out all of the hooks and little details that make these songs so bright is immensely satisfying.

That said, I can see someone just not liking Haim. Add in the very obvious nostalgia factor with what they're doing, and it becomes easy to write off.

This is something that a number of "experimental" artists would agree with, too, I think.

The new Four Tet is really good (surprise, surprise). I really need to see him again live.

EDIT* In other shocking news, Ty Segall's new band "Fuzz" is pretty damn good as well. I'm convinced both artists can do no wrong.

    Haha.

I hear a lot of '80s Fleetwood Mac in them, "Open Your Heart"/"Cherish" era Madonna. That stuff essentially filtered through '90s top 40 R&B and the slicker aspects of current indie pop.

As referenced in the Pitchfork review, this is pretty much spot-on.

Loving the new Danny Brown album. The production is fantastic throughout, and it's home to some truly fascinating beats. The "club rap on speed" stuff from the second half of the album gets particularly head spinning, and even though the lyrical content seems diminished when compared to the first half, the beats carry it through. "Handstand"s ode to pussy popping delivered from within a beat that is the aural equivalent of aggravated assault pretty much captures that sentiment.

Holy jesus. Old. Yeezus and Run The Jewels are two of my favourite albums of the year so far... but Old might just be better.

I enjoyed this, but Precambrian is still the best album by The Ocean. Check it out if you haven't already... I think you would love it.

I definitely will. I only discovered them this year, but that album has been such a joy for me. I don't feel prosodic claiming that it has great depth.

Steve Gunn, a New York based guitarist and former member of Kurt Vile's The Violators, is having a hell of a year. His album Time Off is easily one of the best things I've heard this year. Seek out the song New Decline in particular. Then there's Desert Heat, which is an album he did with long time collaborator John Truscinski and Irish guitarist Cian Nugent, which is two long jams that The Out Door put on their list of overlooked experimental and described quite well here: http://pitchfork.com/features/the-ou...tars-people/2/

So after releasing possibly my favorite album of 2013, Iceage drop this fucking amazing single off an upcoming 7''. These guys are progressing in the best way possible.

EDIT: I guess it's a Sinead O'Connor cover, haha. Still so good though

I don't think I like Haim. I sounds a lot like Michael Jackson with female singers -- the songs have a definite Jackson groove in the background, which although I really dig some Michael Jackson, I'm not so sure about imitators.

I've found myself waking up with songs from Monomania stuck in my head. It's finally clicked for me, and now it's climbing up my favorite releases of the year.

Glad you came around. I figured it would for most who initially disliked it. The material sounds phenomenal live, too.

Agreed. They did a few songs from it at FYF and those are the ones that have been stuck in my head now. Back to the Middle is such a jam.

Back to the Middle was kind of inadvertently ruined for me a bit while listening to Sirius on the way to Big Sur and back, and it being completely overplayed. Not the band's fault, obviously. I really dislike Pensacola still. THM is pretty bad, too. The Missing would be ok if Lockett hadn't written 10 far better songs and put them on an album last year...it just seems a little slight after such a beast of a solo record. I have come around on a lot of the album, though. Leather Jacket II is completely insane, I feel like I'm hearing Bradford lose his mind every time I put the song on...I think that's the one song from the record they haven't played live yet (I imagine it'd be pretty difficult), but it's so good. One of my all-time favorite songs of theirs.

Agree with the MJ groove, at least on the first song. But I still like it, imitators or otherwise.

When Danny Brown is using his normal voice, Old is fucking fantastic. I really can't stand the high register whiny vocals at times, though. Ruins it for me. Chance the Rapper did the same thing on parts of his record.

Finally got around to listening to that Octo Octa album, and the half of it that doesn't sound like every generic sound I heard while walking past the Sahara circa 2010 is really good.

I never cared too much for Julia Holter, but Loud City Song is so great.

EDIT: Yep, this easily just shot to my top 5 of the year. If you haven't listened, get on it.
