Barbarossa - Bloodlines is really a nice soulful, sexy album. Saw this guy open up for Junip (also a touring musician) and really enjoyed what I heard.

Cogent argument because racists in America have totally gotten over their issues with interracial sex.

The Salon piece is ludicrous. What is lost, of course, in all of this concern trolling is that there is no argument in Yeezus. It's pure id and provocation. We're really going to fault Kanye for not having a reasoned argument about race relations or for objectifying sex when the punchline of the album is a demand that someone bring him his damn croissants?

So we're supposed to take him seriously as an artist but not take anything he actually says seriously? We're supposed to praise Yeezus for being an angry tirade against the still persistent side effects of racism in what some people like to thing of as a "post-racism" society but completely ignore the juvenile misogyny he wraps his messages in? I call bullshit. If it's pure id, why even bother with the social commentary? In any case, there's nothing about "Put my fist in her like a civil rights sign" that isn't cringeworthy.

But don't you think it's really deep how he underlines the problem with persisting racism in society with the nonchalance that the black community takes toward misogyny?

I agree that its cringeworthy. I don't think there's any real basis for defending it, or several other lines on the album. I think you and others are entitled to point out the contradictions and messiness of the lyrics to people who are claiming that it is a serious work of racial or political commentary. I for one don't think Yeezus makes a great, praiseworthy statement on the effect of racism in contemporary America, but I do think it makes a statement on what it feels like to be Kanye West in 2013.

But at the same token, I am calling bullshit on all of the armchair cultural commentators who parachute in to cover the event of a Kanye West album and treat him with an entirely different set of metrics than they would any other pop or rap star, just because it happens to fit their own cultural agenda and he's an obvious target. It's lazy click-troll journalism, pretty much the same as your average Eminem piece circa 2000.

In other news. James Holden's The Inheritors is a must hear for anyone with an interest in electronic krautrock. From interviews I've read/heard from him, I knew he was moving away from dance music and more towards analogue kosmische type stuff, and that's exactly where this album falls. Really fucking enjoyable on first listen. There's a real ramshackle feel to a lot of the stuff (another thing I picked up from an interview with him is that he's been really into imperfection and moving away from stuff that's overproduced lately). It's not a complete throwback, and there are times where he actually works up a pretty rigorous groove, but this is mostly chill back and let your mind drift type music. Looking forward to absorbing it more over the next couple of months.

I enjoyed the new James Holden album on my first listen. If you are a fan of analogue music I would highly recommend it. There are some very interesting textures throughout.

Some other albums that I haven't really heard much talk about that I have enjoyed are

Hookworms - Pearl Mystic. My favorite psych rock album of the year. Its aggressive and dark and overall very enjoyable.

Jenny Hval - Innocence is Kinky. A great experimental album from this year. I think it was overlooked because of all the hype around Shaking the Habitual. Its not an easy listen but its very rewarding. I find new things on every listen.

The Haxan Cloak - Excavation. The contemporary dubstep producer came out with a very meticulous drone album that just absolutely blew me away.

Mikal Cronin - MCII. A very enjoyable garage rock album. Cronins voice blends perfectly with the fuzzy guitars to make a really fun album.

Still early but this may be my favorite album from him including Diamond Mine.
This album is really, really great; reminds me of the last two or three Four Tet releases. This track is particularly wonderful.

A few I've really been enjoying today are Cast Studies' This is Another Life, a melancholy collection of well-written Americana tracks, and Other Life by Sean Nichols Savage which sounds like a lovechild between Autre Ne Veut and Ariel Pink.

Haxan Cloak, dubstep producer, wut? Maybe under another name that I don't know of, but all of the THC releases are dark ambient/drone

I've heard of him being a dubstep producer in the past. I haven't looked too much into his early catalogue. But whatever, fuck genres and listen to the music.

Bosnian Rainbows' (Omar Rodriguez Lopez + Teri from Le Butcherettes) new album is on NPR now. I'm most of the way though, and I must say I really enjoy it. Kind of a throwback to stripped down 80's pop/ punk

Fuck. Yes. Bill Callahan announces a new album due out September. Definitely my most anticipated album for the rest of year.

Bill Callahan has announced the follow-up to his excellent 2011 album Apocalypse. Dream River is out September 17 via Drag City. The album was recorded at Cacophony, Tex., earlier this year. A press release calls it "easily the most sensual and soulful of Callahan's career"; he's also planning an extensive tour this fall. Check out the tracklist below.
    Dream River:
    01 The Sing
    02 Javelin Unlanding
    03 Small Plane
    04 Spring
    05 Ride My Arrow
    06 Summer Painter
    07 Seagull
    08 Winter Road

I really need to see him live again. His set at FYF a couple of years ago was great.

I can't recommend Demdike Stare's Testpressing series enough. I mean, I don't know shit about dance music (or how to describe it) but I have so thoroughly loved every one of these releases. The A side on the newest one (#003) is especially amazing.

Where does one find copies of those? Every place I looked is out.

Edit: Found a US distributor for 3, thanks for the recommend.

Keep in mind: Side A of #3 is at 45 rpm, side B is 33. It's not labeled on the release but they're also on soundcloud so that's how people figured it out.

I'm warming up to this release more upon subsequent listens. It is really lovely summertime music.

Also listened to John Robert's Fences this morning. Anyone who enjoyed Tin Man and Recondite's LPs from last year should check it out. It's a bit more eclectic than his first LP due to his world travels and not as straight up "deep house" as some of the other Dial record releases over the years.
