I'm really intrigued by John Grant's Pale Green Ghosts. It's his second solo album and was recorded in Iceland where he now lives, but he used to be in a band called The Czars based in Denver. He reminds me of a butch Rufus Wainwright but he likes european electronica stuff too. The title track to Pale Green Ghosts is good example. I've tried to search but not finding any discussion of him on here. Any fans?

Local radio is playing the single GMF steadily and I really like the song. The FCC version uses "greatest living creature" and it works well.* Here's the video:

bonus video - this is off his first solo album Queen of Denmark done with Midlake. I've heard this song before but just made the connection.

edit: The Guardian has a good interview!

*editagain: Just realized the "radio version" cuts an entire verse too. motherfuckers.

Have you ever wondered what it would sound like if a young Layne Stayley fronted a stoner rock band? Then check out Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats' Mind Control. Not all that great, but a worthwhile listen, especially for a road trip.

The talk is that the first Uncle Acid album is supposed to be where it's at. I plan on listening to it on a long drive Sunday.

Speaking of Alice In Chains, I wish Jerry Cantrell would have continued releasing solo album instead of trying to keep AIC alive. His two solo albums are as good as anything AIC ever released. I saw him live 3 times (twice before Staley died, and once after) and he played tons of AIC songs, pulled the vocals off flawlessly and just fucking destroyed in general.

The new AIC thus far released are good. Wasn't a big fan of the 'comeback' record.

Tullycraft should be more popular. I don't see them listed on any festival lineups or tour listings. Lost in Light Rotation is one of my favorite albums the year. Its filled with fun pop songs with great boy/girl vocals. I like how Jenny Mears is much more prevalent on this album. Just a great album all around. Definitely one of their best.

CocoRosie's Tales of a Grass Widow is eerie and lovely at parts but I don't know yet what to make of it. Which I suppose is somewhat typical for a first listen of their work.

After trying and getting interrupted like 4 times, i finally got to listen to Bath's Obsidian from front to back today. It is a truly terrific follow-up to Cerulean. it takes what he was doing before and adds a lot more texture to the music and production and really cleans up the vocals. Overall it's fairly slow, but dense in a good, and really dark and moody, both sonically and lyrically. There are a lot of really cool and interesting textural sounds all over this thing, like the clicking and whirring of gears and machinery, which i really like, and it fits the mood well.

The new Wolf Eyes record is fantastic. I'm not too familiar with their overall body of work, but this definitely seemed to take a page from the playbook of Drum's Not Dead-era Liars. Of course, it could very well be the other way around. Either way, I love this album. Confession of the Informer is the most menacing track I've heard since Bish Bosch.

That Olafur Arnalds is a good one. Don't know where I would put it among his other releases since I like pretty much everything I've heard from him but I need to get that album into rotation more.

I like it less than most everything else I've heard from him, but it's still good. There are a few stand out tracks, the rest of the album is "good" but not great, IMO.

This Ruby Suns album is everything that is awful about indie bands buying synthesizers. I remember vaguely liking an album of theirs a few years ago, but this is dreck.

I absolutely love Vampire Weekend's new album. Lots of great, danceable rhythms. My favorite tracks are probably some of the most hated (from what I've seen) - Step, Diane Young, and Ya Hey. The voice modulation has been the victim of a lot of complaints but I love that high pitched refrain in Ya Hey. I suppose these may be my early favorites because they were all performed at Coachella, so I already have fond memories of them.

More than anything else, it just feels that this time around the band is really comfortable in their own skin. The first record owed so much to Graceland, and the second seemed to be at least somewhat riffing off of Merriweather Post Pavilion (ok, maybe just Giving Up the Gun, but come on that was really blatant) that it's nice to hear them make an album that's all their own. A lot of the sonic textures and yeah voice effects work really well, imo.
