Ooooooo Inc.'s No World is fucking good. Hitting all the right notes for me right now... I needed a new RnB album to play out. Wow

I like No World but I can't help but think it doesn't have the muscle to define itself in such a competitive field right now. You definitely linked my favorite track though. I may be looking at it wrong, a more reserved album than Anxiety's in your face bombast may be a welcome downshift in gears. I'll give it a few more spins.

EDIT: I love Anxiety. So good.

I read this half asleep last night and went back to bed wondering what kind of bizarre indie folk act Sally Struthers was heading.

The new David Bowie album is a beast. I've only given it one listen so I don't have a secure grasp on it, but it sounded every bit the equal of Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps,) and like the heir to that album's alternately dark and catchy art-damaged rock music. Gone are the long, plodding songs from some of the 90s albums and the classic-era referencing of Heathen and Reality. It sounds more fresh than those yet very Bowie. I have tons of new stuff I want to listen to, but this one is taking over my playlist for the rest of the day at very least.

Boy, the new Buke and Gase sure has grown on me. It may be my favorite of the year so far now. The instrumentation is excellent. It reminds me of a more modern/experimental Mary's Danish (mostly due to the female singer's voice). It may be the most unique recording I've listened to this year.

It's a really cool album. If you didn't know anything about the weird instrumentation you'd never guess they had made their own instruments. They create a great racket.

Man, after a great many listens so many of the songs on m b v feel like classics that have been around forever. Already.

Am I the only one who feels this way?

Nope. I'm dumbfounded that anyone is calling the Nick Cave album the best release of the year for that reason. MBV put out a stone-cold classic, Nick Cave put out a Nick Cave album.

Oh, and Bowie. Just do it.

The album I feel more strongly about between the two is always whichever one I'm listening to at the time. I think they're both absolutely stellar.

The thing is, Nick Cave has released albums in this style recently, both musically and lyrically. Bowie captured an energy he hasn't had in over 30 years, and wrote songs that are already great despite the fact that we haven't heard them fully as of yet.

Bowie may have released the album of the year so far. This shit is absolutely amazing.

MBV, Nick Cave, and Bowie are fucking holding it down for the long-timers this year. Great stuff.

It's the only thing I've heard that is equal to/better than MBV so far.

I'd argue that Cave hasn't released an album like this since The Boatman's Call, which was almost twenty years ago. But even that comparison is fairly superficial – yes, they're both quiet albums, but there's a warmth to Boatman that's missing from his new one. And I don't mean that as an insult. Boatman is warm and inviting, Push the Sky Away is cold, tense, and austere, and that anxiety is one of the things I love about it.

If any band released "just another [insert band name here]" album, it's My Bloody Valentine. I really like it, but let's not pretend it does anything but revisit Loveless in a slightly less satisfying way.

On a more positive note, the new one by The Drones is a deranged, snarling monster. I'll be listening to it a lot.

Fire! Orchestra was one of the best releases to come out early this year. I didn't mention it because I'm pretty sure no one on this board cares about that sort of thing

Really? I mean, maybe the instrumentation on Boatman is warm, but other then that it's a very sad and somber album. Where Do We Go Now But Nowhere?, Idiot Prayer, Far From Me, Black Hair, are all devastating. Some of the few songs that can bring a tear to my eyes...

    8/22 Slint @ El Rey
    8/23-8/24 FYF Fest
    9/11 Swans @ The Roxy

I would argue that it does more than that. The first third is a nod to Loveless sounds and could have easily been outtakes from those sessions. The second third of the album is both more tame and more odd, with an increased focus on keyboards, less rhythmic drive and a nod to ambient music. The last third shows Shields' interest in jungle and other, weirder beat patterns and is more aggressive than anything on Loveless.

But honestly the Nick Cave album just is not doing it for me at all. I've given it four chances and it's decent but I don't get all the ecstatic praise.

On a more positive note, the new one by The Drones is a deranged, snarling monster. I'll be listening to it a lot.
Now this is exciting. I love them live but never really listen to their music. I'll have to find it.

I know nothing about your taste in music, but if that is something you enjoy, and if you've ever been a fan of metal, I would recommend you jump all over Ihsahn's Eremita immediately. If the beginning of this track doesn't do anything for you, jump to the 3 minute mark and I think you'll see where I'm coming from...

Discretion is not posting about each and every release you listen to. Writing about an album which you especially enjoy is exactly what this thread is designed for, regardless of the genre or how unappealing you feel the rest of the board may find it. Someone else enjoyed the album enough to post about it, so never say never.
