The tracks that have been released from that Killer Mike/ El-P colab record have been insanely good. I cannot wait for the album. I just bought tickets for their show here in Vancouver too. Fuck Yeah!

Chk Chk Chk's Thr!!!er sounds a lot like LCD Soundsystem. But that's ok, because it's really fun and well-made.

Bass Drum of Death's self-titled album sounds a lot like Ty Segall. But that's ok, because it's really fun and well-made.

Antenna to the Afterworld is my favorite Sonny and the Sunsets album. Quirky fun pop songs. Many of them about space. Great fun.

Im also loving the new Camera Obscura. Tracyanne Campbells impossibly gorgeous voice is getting even better with time.

Yeezus is pretty killer on first listen. Less noisy than I expected, but still pretty jarring considering it's an album from probably the biggest mainstream musician around right now. Say it rips off Death Grips all you want, Death Grips don't have number ones and play arenas. It's great to hear someone with his reach throw something so ugly into the mix.

Yeezus isn't terrible, but it's sub par for Kanye, imo. He's better than this. Some weak, and poorly placed samples, some horrible lyrics (even for Kanye). Maybe I'll like it more after the initial disappointment, but, it just isn't great.

I just did a search and it seems I'm the only person on the board who's mentioned Tony Molina. I'm really surprised that this album hasn't caught on at all here.

    Tony-Press-Photo-590x391.jpg
Tony Molina - Dissed and Dismissed

Dissed and Dismissed is the first solo album from Ovens/Caged Animal front man Tony Molina. It's very brief, about twelve songs in twelve minutes, but it is pretty much perfect. Most of the songs follow a pretty similar formula, verse/chorus/blazing guitar solo, and are over almost before they even register, but they never feel incomplete. It's got a real 90s college rock sound to, real easy comparisons can be made to Weezer, Dinosaur Jr, Guided by Voices or Teenage Fanclub, but there are also elements of metal and hard core in his virtuoso guitar playing. He's currently working on some singles for Slumberland and Matador, so this hopefully means there will be a lot more coming from him in the future.

Seriously, it's twelve minutes and it is incredibly worthwhile. If you end up digging it, you should check out his band the Ovens (which has been very prolific over the years) as they sound very much like this. A lot of their stuff is available for free through their site (OVENS)

Is it just me or does the new Kanye West album at times sound a bit Death Grip-ish?

This reminds me of how the new Kanye album sounds like it was inspired by Death Grips!

I liked Yeezus on first listen. It's really not the kind of hip hop music I usually listen to but I enjoyed it.I just feel like Kanye could've done so much more with it. I don't think it lives up to his past releases. The backing tracks on the album are incredible though. Very dark and aggressive. They remind me a lot of Gesaffelstein.

I'm typically not much of a hip hop fan, so like most things, my opinion doesn't hold much weight, but Yeezus is really growing on me for some reason. I'm not even sure why but I like the intensity that he brings on a handful of the tracks. I'm not too familiar with his catalogue but of the hits that I've heard, nothing really sounds like this new album. Only tracks that do nothing for me are the final two tracks. i originally didn't care for New Slaves when I first heard it on SNL, but I really like the studio version of the song. I'd give the album a solid 8. It's not really groundbreaking, but I expected to hate it and wound up really liking it.

Does no one read the full statement I wrote re: Justin Vernon? I mean, two thirds of the statement is obviously a joke, why would the first third not be part of the joke as well?

I think I just can't stand Kanye West. I really like a couple of tracks (the SNL ones, especially "Black Skinhead," and "Send It Up" is fucking ridiculous, like Einsturzende Neubauten making a hip-hop beat), and others are absolute embarrassments (that Nina Simone track). But even when it's really good, I keep wishing his personality wasn't a part of it. The lyrics seriously read like a Dave Chappelle parody of what Kanye West lyrics are like, which, admittedly, is all kinds of entertaining, but for the wrong reasons. I'm not sure what chauvinism has to do with civil rights, but Kanye needs to realize his dick isn't revolutionary.

Among all of the things I don't understand and don't even want to be swayed on about Kanye, it's that. Oh, and the whole "it doesn't matter that he's a terrible lyricist" bit.

This is why it's sad Dave Chappelle went off the deep end. Because Chappelle doing Kanye would be fantastic.
