However, I will say that high 5's at a festival is by no means a festival fopa, as long as its neither excessive nor disruptive. Case and point: after the mosh pit at NIN, everyone showed appreciation for each other by handing out high 5's.
side note: that mosh pit robbed me of my camera lens. More relevant, the high 5's happened between songs. I'd hate to be bothered by some random shmo I had not previously interacted with trying to high five me mid song. No, get away from me with your HIV hands.

Dude, that's how mosh pits are supposed to work. Ever been to punk shows? Pit goes crazy, but between songs everyone is smiles & hugs & high-fives. Yelling & high-fiving strangers in the middle of a set shows an intense lack of awareness and a glut of misplaced self-importance.

Damn. I wish I could've been a part of those high fives. I just annoyed everyone near me by screaming out the lyrics to "Gave Up" and "March of the Pigs." If only I were a big sweaty bro! Just for you, Trent. Only for you.

What's up with the available videos on Ustream? Nothing from the National, Phoenix, NIN, Grizzly Bear, Jurassic 5, Kaskade, Chic, and Vampire Weekend. That really sucks, Ustream. You would think someone on the interwebs recorded those sets. Haven't searched for all of those artists but the couple that I have only pull up crowd videos.

Self-importance? Can't someone just be in a good mood?

Of course people can be in a good mood. There's a difference between someone being in a good mood and enjoying themselves (smiling, cheering) and being the kind of self important asshole that feels the need to share their "good mood" with their neighbors by yelling in their face and taking the other person out of their own experience by forcing them to touch them.

Like, do you really not understand the meaning of "self-importance" and how someone who inconveniences others at the expense of their own "enjoyment and good mood" is exhibiting that trait?

Seriously -- stop being a dense dick just for the sake of trying to make the argument that people are at festivals to have a good time. We all understand that. You'd be properly peeved if you went to see a movie and the dude next to you was demanding high-fives and cheering in a way that disrupted you from watching the fucking movie. How this is a concept that needs to be explained ad nauseum to you people is beyond me.

People shouldn't even be looking at others in the crowd when there's live music on stage.

Concert policy is the same as urinal policy....you don't talk, you keep your eyes up and you look straight ahead.

    And there's a two-shake minimum.

And the "they were in a good mood/just having fun" line of defense is the absolute shoddiest line of defense possible. You were caught up in the moment of your own enjoyment and having fun? Good for fucking you, that still doesn't mean it gives you some sort of free pass to not be judged by the people you may have disturbed while having your fun. That's the epitome of someone being self-important: demanding some sort of carte blanche free for all for their behavior and then throwing a defensive hissy fit upon finding out they may have bothered someone else.

Yeah, pretty much that. Of course we're all in a good mood, we're at a festival. I come stocked with confetti and streamers and nothing but positive energy to throw around on everyone I see. I like to have a fun, whimsical time. But I understand that other people are trying to enjoy the set as well and don't appreciate me talking to them or grabbing onto them or otherwise disrupting their experience for the sake of my own. Really not complicated or difficult to act accordingly.

Some people might not enjoy confetti or streamers being thrown at them, but FUCK THEM if they have that (or any opinion not completely in line with the opinion you have about throwing confetti). And fuck them extra if they choose to, at a later date, share what their opinion of that experience was with others.

....Okay. That's perfectly okay. That doesn't even rank on the self-important asshole scale.

You were worried that people having a conversation about the kind of assholes who loudly celebrate the fact that they are at a festival by screaming in other people's faces/give high fives during the middle of a set to absolute strangers somehow also indicted you as an asshole for singing along to a band at a festival?

    *Perhaps you are self-important.

People have in fact complained here on the board about people singing along at Coachella. So amy's sensitivity is more understandable than you make it out to be. Me, I agree with you, sing your heart out.

You were singing into your hands which were cupped over your mouth, and not into the open night air, right?
