I guess I get the appeal of Grimes, but I definitely don't understand how that could be someone's favorite album of the year.

The comments on a GvB Facebook post last week were full of people saying that Grimes was the best of the year. Fucking mind-boggling.

    10/10 - Thurston Moore/Sebadoh - Echoplex (?)
    10/11 - BADBADNOTGOOD - Echoplex (?)

To be fair, he asked people to guess his top three. He already named Chromatics and Grimes as a tie for first in his 2012.5 list.

I think it's possibly my "favorite," or at least my most listened to/enjoyed, but I don't consider it to be the best. I love the shit out of it, but it's fairly lightweight, especially when there's behemoths like a 2 hour Swans album out there.

Once you get past the memes and "post-internet" intellectualization of Grimes, there's just not much to say about the music. I don't get it.

I didn't really care for the Grimes album when I heard it first earlier this year... But it has grown on me quite a bit since then and now I enjoy it quite a bit. Genesis and Oblivion have turned into two of my favorite songs of the year and the show I saw of hers about a month ago is one of the most fun shows I have been to this year. With that being said, Im not sure if her album will crack my top 10.

It was released last year, in December. But maybe they also posted their top albums list in November last year and missed it. Either way, El Camino on a top 10? Hmm...

Anyone who has Scott Walker on a list already, unless they ditched their family this past weekend and did nothing but listen to the album, is a premature twat. It's going to take until at least mid-December for Bish Bosch to full reveal itself. For me anyway.

And the good folks over at KCRW continue to prove they have the most boring taste in music imaginable. I mean, that Poolside album is nice and sunny and fun and all, but top 10? Come on.

Scott Walker is already in my top 10 for the year after three listens. I haven't listened since I read the interview where he clarifies a few things.

Not a bad choice considering what 2012 delivered in terms of music. I miss the days of 2007 - 2010. A lot of new fresh music from old and new bands constantly came out and surprised me. I have not been impressed by much in e last 2 years.

Agreed...how can Rhye's The Fall make a top album list? It's a fucking single with a b side...an EP if you're really stretching the definition. Not that I don't like it but come the hell on.

After reading this thread, especially this post, I realized I'm not enough of a music geek anymore to take part in these discussions and in list making.

I disagree. While it's true that numbered lists are rather arbitrary and don't really mean much in the scheme of things, I always discover three of four albums I missed during the year by looking them over. If there is a lot of overlap between what I enjoyed and what is on a given list, I'll do a bit of research on some of the albums I haven't heard of; it's lead to a lot of great discoveries.

My main gripe is it's not even December. I already love the.new Scott Walker and the Colin Stetson/Mats Gustaffson albums, for example

After seeing it on so many of those KCRW top ten lists, I just listened to the Father John Misty album all the way through for the first time. I don't think I've heard a more relentlessly mediocre album all year.
    10/01 - King Crimson - Orpheum
    10/10 - Thurston Moore/Sebadoh - Echoplex (?)
    10/11 - BADBADNOTGOOD - Echoplex (?)
    10/12 - IAMX - Complex
10/13 - Oren Ambarchi - Jewels Catch One

I don't know, the Wild Nothing, Grimes, DIIV and Purity Ring albums define mediocrity.

I have to answer this for my buddy who is starting to compile his 2012 review radio show. To be honest not finding it easy at this stage.

Darren Hayman And The Long Parliament -'The Violence' has been a recent favorite. Leonard Cohen's 'Old Ideas' has been consistently played and Graham Coxon's 'A+E'. Nothing has really stood out and grabbed me this year.
