Thread: Austin City Limits 2013

  1. #1

    Default Austin City Limits 2013

Still a month or so away from a lineup release, but how does this fest stack up to the competition? A buddy of mine is trying to get me to go to Lolla, but given the crossover between that, Outside Lands, and Coachella, and given that I've never been to Austin, I'm intrigued by ACL. And if they get Atoms for Peace, that'd be huge.

I believe Depeche Mode has an ACL gap.

I'd expect NIN as well since they're playing voodoo less than two weeks after weekend 2.

Depeche is pretty strongly rumored and has been for months? now. pretty sure jen hinted at it back in december or january.

a reporter in austin who relayed similar depeche info also said the cure were in talks for ACL but my take is that he misinterpreted the cure negotiating with c3 for lolla as then being lined up for ACL. i just can't see NIN/Depeche Mode/the Cure headlining ACL.

also muse has rumors behind them, but i don't know where those are coming from.

typically ACL has 2 of Lolla's headliners then one headliner out of left field.

If Depeche Mode and the Cure both headlined the same fest, a) it would be awesome, and b) I wouldn't have pegged it for ACL!

Springsteen is the curveball headliner I'm watching. Spring/fall US tours and not a single proper date in Texas. Playing South America in late September and rumblings of other late summer US dates.

Would Atoms for Peace constitute a headliner? They strike me as likely as well - open both weekends and playing Mexico City in between. (Which I guess I kind of mentioned in OP).

    Depeche, Springsteen and ???

Atoms for Peace will sub one of the days.

If NIN was in there, then theres probably a full tour announcement to go right along with it. Maybe HTDA gets a slot also.

be sure to buy tickets the second they go on sale. this thing sells out faster than coachella.

at least it's 2 weekends this year, shouldn't be too hard to snake something off craigslist/stubhub closer to the dates

Hm, why does it sell out so quickly? Low capacity? Doesn't seem to be a festival with top-tier buzz.

Capacity is 75,000. I'm not sure why it sells out so incredibly fast. University of Texas is in Austin which could explain some of it. 50,000 students are enrolled there and Austin is a very music friendly city so I think it's a combination of the two. Lots of early twentysomethings in a musical city. There is a good amount of people 35 and older that attend each year as well. More so than any other major festival I've been to. Also, ACL is one of the biggest festivals in the US and since C3 took it over they've provided it with a lineup fairly similar to Lollapalooza each year. So I think it's a combination of the lineup and location that help it sell out so fast.

Seems to be following the trend of selling out really quick in recent years like Coachella and Lolla. Five years ago, 3-day passes didn't sell out until a few weeks before the fest.

We're here to play some Mississippi Delta Blues. We're in a horrible depression, and I gotta admit - we're starting to like it.

out of personal experience, a lot of people at OSL seemed like they were there not giving a damn about the music. I've done SXSW twice and the city of Austin definitely gives a damn about their music.

acl is a great time. the city, food, park, and music all combine to make it an excellent time! i have attended coachella and acl five times. i love both!

additionally, the security is very laid back in austin (unlike the gestapo pat down and searches at coachella)

it's a good festival and run very well, but it is a nightmare for anyone that drives. parking is expensive too unless you want to park a mile or two away from the park. i wish they had a parking pass option like other festivals because being in the middle of a city means that pretty much every parking lot near the festival puts up tow away zone signs.
