I go to school there / grew up near there.

Need specific likes and dislikes, because there is a ton to do in the city. It is also nothing like the rest of Texas.

I love Austin. Went there in 06 for the National Slam Poetry competition.

Love the enormous bat colony living under the Congress bridge. They fly into the night at the same time every day and the sight and sounds are unforgettable.

Wonderfully friendly and very eccentric people everywhere. Intense live music scene, of course. Awesome food. My fave teriyaki place there was called Wiki Wiki Teriyaki. Cheap and delicious.

And I met Quentin Tarantino there, which was a plus.

People used to complain that it was crowded with students but the metro population has practically doubled in the past 15 years while the student population has only increased by maybe 20%. South Congress can be overrun by hipsters sometimes and 6th Street can be overrun by douche bags but it's not bad enough to keep you from going there. Really fun city. SXSW, Fun Fun Fun, ACL on top of the only constant music scene in Texas is a huge draw for me.

Austin, Berkeley, Tucson. worst drivers on the planet. It's not the students, its the marginally-employable university hangers-on that don't have adequate attention span to execute a right turn appropriately.

Other than that though Austin is really fun. I almost always can manage to have a good time doing something there.

Any of you folks live in Austin currently and going to fest? I'd like to connect with some fellow ATXers while at the fest. The friend I'm going with is a wild Pixie and she disappears frequently so it'd be nice to have fellow ATXers to hang out with. I've gone to many shows in Austin by myself and have no problm being by myself especially while seeing music, but this is a special event, and my first time so it'd be nice to know more people to connect with while there to share the experience with and maybe make some awesome new friends I can connect once back to ATX. And I'm sure I'll meet plenty of friendly cool people from all over the world too but I love my ATXers!

I went to Austin in 07, 08 and 09 for the ACL Fest. Cool city.
We're here to play some Mississippi Delta Blues. We're in a horrible depression, and I gotta admit - we're starting to like it.

So, I'm moving to Austin this summer. What are some of the best/worst venues in the city? I've only been to the Mohawk (which I loved).

Stubbs is pretty good and they get a lot of good shows, especially during sxsw. Emos East is like 2 years old and really spacious. The Moody Theater is where they do the tapings for the ACL TV show, but they also shows there that aren't taped. La Zona Rosa is a good small venue. Austin Music Hall is a decent 2 story venue. Most shows sell tickets for either the balcony or the floor. The Backyard is probably my favorite venue. It's an outdoor venue that is set up like the outdoor stage. Red 7 is one of my favorite places too, really small room like mohawk with both an indoor and an outdoor stage. There's a ton of good venues I'm sure I'm leaving out as well.

Thanks for the info! I didn't know you were living there now. I'll probably bump into you quite often at shows.

EDIT* Wow, the Back Yard looks awesome. Great scenery.

Also, is Stubbs like the Mohawk in the sense that there's an indoor and outdoor stage?

I actually moved into my new place this weekend. And yeah, Stubbs has an indoor stage and some bands do aftershows inside. Most of the indoor shows are free or at most $5. The outdoor stage is pretty big.

You guys should go to the Housecore Movie Festival. It is Phil Anselmo's festival and it looks amazing,; especially if you like horror films. It is relatively cheap. I wanna go, but really have no one to go with. (sad face)

Shady Grove, Broken Spoke, Continental Club, & Momo's were all enjoyable establishments when I visited. Threadgill's had a lot of really great acts when I was there as well. I mean, if you're into shitkicker music. Probably not too much psych or garage stuff happening at those places.

I'm taking my kid to the Rooster Teeth Expo (RTX) there next month, and I'm looking for irresponsible things to do. Suggestions?

Everyone has told me the traffic is the worst - and I'm from L.A. - the result of a small infrastructure that can't support the amount of folks traversing the city. I guess that's why I'm moving to DFW. Anyhow - we'll probably go to the Alamo Draft House (one of 'em) just to do it, and get some local eats. Any other suggestions? The more irresponsible, the better, I live for bad parenting.

I've only been here a week so I can't really recommend anything out of the ordinary at this point. I mean, I can recommend some great bars and stuff like that. Sounds like you're looking for a bit more, though.

    EDIT*
Also, traffic is only bad during rush hour in my experience so far. Doesn't seem bad at all. The drivers, however, are fucking awful.

Because it was time for a change, the cost of living isn't high, and it's an amazing music town.
