    Default The Nature Thread

The Nature Thread....a calm, soothing, restful place where fellow nature lovers can post pics or relate their happy encounters with the natural world. Mostly, it's an excuse for me to post pics of the two bird's nests at our place. I am terribly excited about it. And baby birds deserve their own thread.

    The House Finches:

They took up residence in a hanging planter on our patio:

Yesterday evening when the mother had flown off, I took a quick look and it appears to be three(?) new hatchlings!

    The Hummingbird:

She picked her spot in a shrub directly in front of our bedroom window:

Began her build (took about 5 days):

    And is patiently nesting:

Her egg/s should hatch any day now. We set a tripod up in the bedroom so we could document the whole process.

Will post updates as more hatchlings appear and we get to see feeding and fledging.

    UPDATES:

    #1 newborn Hummers
    #2 fuzzy Finches
    #3 feathers and wings
#4 bye bye birdies and feeding hummers
#5 last update gone baby gone

Just got back from a 3 day backpacking trip in the Sierra Ancha Wilderness.
Camping without a tent for the first time, drinking fresh spring water, exploring the mountains, waking up to watch the sun rise... Man it was beautiful.

    BABY BIRD UPDATE!!!

    ONE baby Hummer:

Head is bald and eyes are still closed.

    TWO baby Hummers:

    Just their bills poking up.

We haven't been able to get pics of her feeding them yet because she keeps her back to the window and shields them from view. Maybe as they get bigger we'll have more luck.

Today on the Cedar Creek Falls Trail, Upper San Diego River Valley (photos by 1litro):

Amazing what a good winter of rain can do to our beautiful backcountry! The trail and hill sides were awash with wildflowers. Too many to post here; I've never seen so many species in bloom at once.

FUN FACT: Did you know that ground squirrels have an enzyme in their blood that neutralizes rattlesnake venom? (A rattlesnake strike will not kill them, though I imagine they're not feeling too good afterward.)

thats due to survival of the fittest.. the squirrels kept getting ate so they eventually over time grew used to the venom and the ones that dint kept dying and the ones that have said enzyme were given opportunity to reproduce and pass on that trait.
