LOL, I'll have to go look, but I remember Chia saying it was definitely more full of bro's this year, and that at one point she may have considered this to be her last year for a while. I think it might have been a brief moment in passing (for her), but I definitely remember a conversation claiming this year's to be the worst crowd yet.

I'll find my source, bitch. You tell me, was the crowd worse?

No. It becomes wrong when Insomniac books the same artists year after year and tries to mask it with huge over the top production.

Sure there are always good artists sprinkled in there, but not enough to justify spending nearly $1,000 or more on the whole experience (Tickets, hotel, etc.).

I had zero crowd issues at DEMF. It was more crowded and I know we discussed that capacity may become an issue in the future...There was certainly a fair share (as there always has been) of younger ravers (but I'd overhear them talking about Aphex Twin and a bunch of other stuff I'd be shocked to find the typical Southern California raver even knowing about). But comparing DEMF and EDC still seems like a relentlessly futile exercise: they are different festivals with different ethos and geared toward different crowds, all under the very large umbrella of "dance music." I hope you do make it out next year though, Dylan, cus I know you'd have a lot of fun.

I agree. I just think it's stupid to bash people for having fun, unless you're funny while you're doing it. Grannock should leave that to you.

I'll be there, Carave, you can use this post for future citation.

Oh shut up. You people laugh at Rocklahoma line-ups, and this shit is, for the most part, the electronic equivalent of it, aside from a stage or two. No one is begrudging anyone a good time, but it can be disappointing to see quality people choose an expensive festival that has a focus on spectacle over something that is cheaper and more musically rich. Abstract, cerebral electronic music is great, but it's not like everything that isn't top 40 style cheese is dull and plodding and anti-fun. The reason we love festivals like DEMF is that they are ridiculously crazy, wild, F-U-N parties with music that doesn't pander to the lowest common denominator. I would hate to show up to Detroit one year and find it filled with chin strokers. People rage really fucking hard at that fest while still being respectful and aware enough to not turn into total shit shows (for the most part, although it does get fairly sloppy at times). I don't know where this conception came where festivals that feature underground/classic DJs are stiff, uptight black tie affairs, but being interesting and having fun aren't mutually exclusive. I don't know how anyone can look at an EDC or Ultra lineup and not think that their primary pursuit was in putting together what is going to sell the most over putting together a well rounded, diverse, and compelling musical experience. To which some idiot will respond: "Isn't the goal of any promoter to make money?" and I have no idea why you're on a message board for Coachella in the first place.

Just because some people can have fun at a Linkin Park or Mumford & Sons concert doesn't mean that someone who wants to see something a little more compelling is a boring, pretentious prude.

Oh, and this is just silly. There's a variety of different parties with excellent music at literally all hours of the day in Detroit during DEMF. No one's sitting around in their Doubletree room twiddling their thumbs and biding their time until they can go into the actual festival. There's a shit ton of things to do in Detroit while not at the festival -- walking along the river and staring at Canada while enjoying the sun, eating bomb ass food at Slo's, exploring the city. You can gamble at the casinos there too!

The only reason people are at the Doubletree is because they've taken too many drugs and can't see to walk.

They don't twiddle their thumbs, they read books and watch SVU marathons, right? Look, I do not have a single fucking problem with Detroit, I can't fucking wait to go there. Stop.

I've read the reviews here post-EDC and some reviews from friends and other websites, and seriously, hasn't EDC been about the experience and the production more so than the artists they bring? I mean they bring an array of electronic music, different genres, live bands and DJ/Producers, but overall the goal has been to create a great space that is supposed to be inviting to any fan of electronic music.

If you are looking to hear some of the best underground artists, and don't care about any of the other sensory overloads that most raves tend to strive for, then don't go to EDC, its too expensive and not worth it for you. Which could also be said for Ultra and Tomorrowland...

However if you want to see some of the best production and happen to hear some great music to go along with some crazy light shows, lasers, and pyrotechnics, EDC is the place to be.

The one issue I have with EDC is i wish they would release the lineup sooner so if you wanted to do some lineup research it wouldn't be stuffed into the few weeks leading up to the event.

Linkin Park opening up for Tool was actually A LOT of fun for the fact how many things people were throwing at them and screaming that they sucked.

edc was much better this year than 2012. the stage production was only the highest quality. the crowd was alright. music was great and only had an hour or two of non interest. everyone i talked to seemed to be there for their first time so the event seemed to be filled with a newer crowd. all in all I will consider going back next year for the 5th time.

This may not be the appropriate time for this question, but does EDC have a message board?
    Whiskey Sour

    2 oz blended whiskey
    Juice of 1/2 lemon
    1/2 tsp powdered sugar
    1 cherry
    1/2 slice lemon

Shake blended whiskey, juice of lemon, and powdered sugar with ice and strain into a whiskey sour glass. Decorate with the half-slice of lemon, top with the cherry, and serve.

EDC was a blast this year. I had tons of fun with my friends, and that's really the bottom line. I had a blast with them when they took me to see Porter Robinson, Calvin Harris, and Tiesto, and they had a blast when I took them to see John Digweed, Sasha, Booka Shade, Richie Hawtin, Carl Cox, Justin Martin, Eric Prydz, and Green Velvet. The production was spectacular, and I got to see a bunch of artists in many different genres (Simon Patterson, Bryan Kearney, Yoji, SubFocus, Ed Rush & Optical, Andy C all had great sets). Overall I spent about $1000 on this trip, but the memories I created in those 4 days in Vegas (both at the event itself and in Vegas in general) were well worth it. This was my 8th edc overall, and I am definitely going back again next year.

...And yes, I will be at DEMF this year.

I loved EDC and enjoyed a lot of sets, from Swedish House Mafia to Sasha, judge me? I had not heard much electronic music, but continued listening to more and more since then. After moving to a city with a huge music scene, it was great to finally be able to go to electronic music events on a regular basis. The problem was that I wasn't 21, and finding what you would deem a "quality" club event as a 19-20 year old was not going to happen much. Luckily I enjoy trance, and there were 18+ trance shows, but other than that I couldn't go to much, so I continued to going to big 18+ events where I could see at least some variety (EDC 2011/2012). Yeah I heard about DEMF but I could not afford the flights to Detroit and one of the years it was during my finals. Now that I'm 21 I go to as many quality electronic music shows as possible. I went to Movement this year and really enjoyed it. As you said yourself, it's not comparable to EDC, as they are completely different. It's a very good festival and I'll definitely be going back to it. I also just went to EDC last week and still enjoyed it. Since turning 21 I've also gone to as many quality shows in the city as possible and it was frustrating seeing some great artists come through and perform that I couldn't see live. I have never done ecstasy in my life and don't plan to. I go to events for music, if I respect the artist who is performing I'll go by myself to see them, whether I have someone to go with or not.

Does this make me a narrow minded person? Am I narrow minded for attending and enjoying events that are accessible to me? Just because I enjoy Insomniac events doesn't mean I slobbered over them, I'm not sure I'd go to many now if I still had to pay for them, since I now have access to seeing more variety in place that I live.

Maybe you're narrow minded for assuming that anyone who attends certain events just has "shitty" taste? Why even comment in this thread every year if you don't go to EDC? You just come in here to try to talk down to others who go and have a good time, and it makes you seem like a pretty shitty person.

I'm pretty sure I saw you at the Beatport stage at around 3pm, with your boyfriend. Both of you were wasted off your asses and he was falling over himself, bumping into people and spilling beer. It was pretty ironic since you sit on these boards on your high horses and criticize the crowd at other events for being sloppy, etc. Maybe it wasn't you, I don't know. Either way I wouldn't judge, everyone enjoys different events in different ways, to each their own. Maybe one day you'll come to terms with that instead of generalizing other people and insulting them for enjoying music that you think is bad.

Shout out to everyone who went to EDC this year, it was a great time and definitely one of my favorite years so far. I'm glad some variety was brought to the main stage this year!

Did anyone see Infinity Ink? I saw the last ten minutes of that set only because we were waiting to see Pete Tong, and Infinity Ink yelled into the mic "I love you Coachellaaaa!" or "what's up coachella" or something along those lines. We booed loudly. I'm sure touring can become a blur but confusing a nascar race track for the polo fields, 2 months later, is quite the mistake.
