Ultimately it's only a real choice between two candidates, and voting elsewise is only a symbolic gesture which only serves to shape the face of one of the other two parties.

The United Kingdom is currently a coalition between Conservatives and Liberal Democrats (3rd party). Labour is the opposition.

Germany is probably the biggest example where CDU/CSU, SPD, FDP polled 33.8%, 23.0% and 14.6% respectively. The Greens and The Left poll over10% and have been the power brokers in forming coalitions. Merkel has a coalition of CDU/CSU and FDP.
Similarly France is a coalition government of several parties.

Oh and that is just three major democracies. Italy, Spain, Greece, Canada and numerous others are multi-party democracies.

US is different than most. Pluarlity-takes-all single district legislative elections. Non-parliamentary election of the chief executive. That system will never lead to more than two long-term viable parties at any given time.

The quirk of the electoral college does make third party voting only slightly less rational than major party voting in one of the forty non-competitive states, however.

    Oh and really.

I'm not talking about the constituency of the legislature. I'm talking about the choice between national leaders. It almost always boils down to two realistic choices.
Not since the mid 1800's here has there been anything close to a third candidate doing anything more than spoiling the chances of the 1st runner up. You'd be hard pressed to find a significant number of occurances at the national level elsewhere either. A major contending 3rd party candidate would just amount to an even poorer mandate, with the majority of the country being very dissatisfied instead of roughly half marginally dissatisfied. That's why it doesn't happen.

Sigh I like how you diluted to 'almost always' a classic sign you were wrong...

But let's go again. Italy's last five Presidents have come from Christian Democracy, Italian Socialist, Independent (Olive Tree) and Democrats of the Left. The Prime Ministers have come from Independent, People of Freedom, Olive Tree and Forza Italia.
Similarly the French Presidency has been split by several parties from Socialist Party, Union of Popular Movement, Republican, Democratic Center etc.

You are quite clearly mistaken that it boils down to two parties, with the third an irrelevance in most of Europe. The smaller parties are often the difference in forming a coalition. Coalition governments actually force parties to compromise and work together to find common ground.

Also in respect to the US not having anything close to a third candidate since the 1800's Teddy Roosevelt ran has a Progressive candidate in 1912 against Wilson (Democrat) and Taft (Republican). Roosevelt was the last 3rd party candidate to split the Democrats and Republicans.

this two party thing is destined for extinction. two people cannot match the views of the rest of the nation. there need to be more options to choose from, hell you get 3 flavors of milk shakes at mcdonalds for christ sake. let me have at least 3

It is very hard to buck an establishment unless things get really, REALLY bad.

Until then, enjoy the two party system. I don't think we'll see that change in our lifetimes.

Ohio is close enough to where a strong get-out-the-vote effort by Republicans can win it for them. They won't win Wisconsin -- that's a pipe dream, and they have no chance in Pennsylvania.

New Hampshire, Iowa, and Nevada don't look good for Romney -- especially Iowa and Nevada.

Romney's only real hope is to take Colorado, Ohio, Florida, and Virginia. This will be hard, but not impossible.

But Alabama won, one of those rules is going to be broken. Technically the Redskins rule failed to predict the election correctly in 2004.

I found out Obama won at a concert in 08, fun times when the act announced it. For the most part seems as though Obama is going to take it tonight, hopefully its not too close to call and we have to wait a month to find out who won.

They are saying if the vote is really really close the provisional ballots in Fla may decide the election. The catch is, by law, they can't count them for 10 flipping days. cr****

For the hours of coverage this evening, the networks could at least make things a little more exciting. A montage of soccer goal highlights for every electoral vote the network decides to call? A briefcase style ‘Who wants to be a millionaire’ reveal for each state? NFL clips edited together of full-on drives, touchdowns, extra points, and field goals for every electoral vote? Pushups by each candidate? The ‘Price is Right’ yodeler? One of these for each candidate?
