Thread: FYF Fest 2013

As someone casually interested in seeing MBV I felt satisfied with what I saw of their performance (up to "Only Shallow"). I found parts of it pretty thrilling. If the vocals dropped out later that would have been inconsequential to me since they were mostly inaudible from the start. I thought that was part of their thing anyway.

Thanks for the tip, I haven't been to my old stomping grounds in a while.

I'm back in SD and back at work. Had a great time at FYF. It was my first one and I was pretty impressed with everything overall.

It was great to meet so many board people at Wurstkuche and then to run into people throughout the weekend. Big thanks to Zach for introducing me to so many folks. Everyone I talked to was friendly and interesting.

Weird how that works, I've even had my hearing checked thoroughly a few times because I assumed that after 20+ years of loud concerts and dancing near speaker stacks, I surely have hearing loss, but it seems to be just fine. MBV was not really loud enough to satisfy me, but I understand they were limited by the location. I used earplugs, but took them out a couple of times to see how loud it was and it was tolerable without them. About 45-60 minutes in, I walked about 30 feet behind the soundboard to sit and could hear people talking over the music easily.

She opened for QOTSA a couple weeks back and that was the setup, along with a bassist. Can't recall if guitarist or bassist handled keyboard/synth, but one of them did. I found them pretty horrible. After the first or second song in the set someone in the audience yelled out "More reverb!". The crowd busted up.

The pictures are fine. The act in question is a solo artist backed by 3-4 others, so there isn't as great a need for photos of everyone.

if it was 1 photo I would not disagree, but to essentially have 4 of the same photo cutting out the rest of performers on stage just because the singer is attractive is dumb.

Worth mentioning since the set was so great...It wasn't at the merch tent this weekend, but the Breeders have been selling a great Jay Ryan print at their merch booths this whole Last Splash tour. Its available on his website if you'd like to get one:

It was great meeting you and all of your pals. Thanks for letting me tag along. Your whole crew was so much fun!! It was the perfect example of how going solo to a festival can be so much fun!

As for the fest itself, it was my first time and I was very impressed. The layout works really well for such a small space. The dust obviously sucked but I did like the mats at each stage. It made the only unbearable part the walk between stages and I just broke out the old dust mask on occasion and I was fine. The food was surprisingly tasty. I had the pork Vietnamese nachos which were delicious and a surf and turf burrito later in the day that was yummy as well. The beer selection was pathetic. Stella, shock top, and bud?? Really GV?? Why can't we get a real beer selection like they do at Outside Lands? One of these years I guess.
Now to the music. Here's my top 5. (Only went Saturday)

    1) Deerhunter- I've seen them 5 times now and this was my favorite set of the bunch. They were really on their game and I loved the 15 minute jam near the end.
    2) TVOTR- wow!! They have always been a bit hit or miss live, but they really brought it this time.
    3) Death Grips- has heard from many that I trust that they kill live and they didn't disappoint. Such a dark unique sound. Nice chatting with you TallguyCM for a bit until I was swept away by the pit
    4) Crystal Antlers- great afternoon set.
    5) SMD- gotta be honest, their live set is WAY better but it was still a great dance party for the hour I saw before Death Grips.

Honorable mention- Metz, Horse Meat Disco and Breeders.

Count me in next year and from here on out. Was a fantastic way to end one of my favorite festival seasons ever.

    I'm really looking forward to Simian Mobile Disco's set in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018.

EDIT* In all seriousness, I'm looking forward to seeing them in November.

This is my 4th FYF and it was by far the most enjoyable one. Didn't seem overcrowded and if you had a bandana the dust wasn't too bad.

    Top five of the weekend
    1) Death Grips
    2) TV On The Radio
    3) Les Savy Fav
    4) Yo La Tengo

It was called Street Food Truck. I had the surf and turf burrito from there and it was excellent.

Their tamales that are filled into a snow cone paper are tasty.
    Whiskey Sour

    2 oz blended whiskey
    Juice of 1/2 lemon
    1/2 tsp powdered sugar
    1 cherry
    1/2 slice lemon

Shake blended whiskey, juice of lemon, and powdered sugar with ice and strain into a whiskey sour glass. Decorate with the half-slice of lemon, top with the cherry, and serve.
