Rap is bar none the most collaborative mainstream genre. People expect guests because half of the average rapper's catalogue include prominent features by other singers, rappers, and producers, and often these featured verses or choruses are the defining moment of the song. People complained about the fact that Dre and Snoop had so many guests, but there are entire songs on 2001 where he doesn't rap a bar.

A reality if you were at Jay Z 2010. Big Pimpin became a minute long song because it was just Jay Z rapping his bits in all his hits. Sort of cool, but mostly depressing. I'd have rather heard the hits in their entirety, rather than hear them mashed up like we're listening to the friday night mix down on our local hip hop radio station.

The only hip hop act or artist that would generate universal excitement as a headliner is Outkast.

The festival needs a better hip hop undercard like it used to have in the early years. Book Rakim in the Gobi. ATCQ reunion. Bring back acts like Common, The Roots, Mos Def / Yasiin, Talib Kweli, The Pharcyde, J5. Less shit like The Airplane Boys.

God damn, don't even mention the Airplane Boys. Now there are two more google hits if anyone does a search for them by accident. They need to be suffocated and/ or shunned. Aside from that.... Yes. Very yes. Common/ Roots/ Mod Def/ Talib (black star)/ Pharcyde.... if Coachella has any sense, they'll ignore ever bringing Eminem back, and go after the real acts.

All the board complaints about Kanye's set (too long, no guests, too many album cuts that slowed the set down) are the exact opposite of the board complaints about Dre/Snoop (too short, too many guests, no album cuts).

No, don't remember that...do you remember when 95% of the people who posted in the "top 5 sets of coachella 2012" thread had Dre and Snoop in their list? Doesn't seem like most people thought it ruined the set, in fact most were saying that the guests are what made that set be in their top 5.

My complaint was the sound. The sound was shit. He needs a backing band if he's going to headline. There's NOTHING interesting about Kanye solo doing his 808s and MBTDF material, if you can call it material. Watch the Throne is at least as bad, for those who think Kanye should make a return.

I stayed for about twenty minutes of Kanye's blaring rap before deciding that a good night sleep was more worth my time. Apologies for not having forced myself through an intolerable set. Kudos to you. I was honestly very much looking forward to seeing Kanye. The Strokes ended up being my real headliner, and they put on what I thought was a great show. Same stage, and no sound issues. Go figure.

maybe it's my fault for hyping it up the way i did. dre was probably my number one act i wanted to see last year and i guess it was too much to ask for them to play more than 5 songs from their catalog. maybe they should've labeled it Dr. Dre (and friends) since that's what it was.
