Suprefan: The first to know
GV putting on the show, and its a small venue. The band prob wanted to have a promo show for their new record. And considering Coachella will sell out in an hour come January, this is neglegible.
Cause when Arcade Fire played IN LOS ANGELES in 2010 2 months BEFORE Coachella, thats an exception, correct? Jay Z in 09? Shit, Radiohead played 200 miles from the festival 2 days before they were going to play, no biggie, right....
Theres going to be a small percentage of acts that might end up with shows in January post line up announcement, it happens. But this it at the point now where GV isnt hurting the bottom line at all. I mean, they have most of everyones money already, whats 4 or 5 shows in comparision to millions of dollars.

Coachella didn't technically sell out until late March or early April last year when you factor in the hotel packages. There are STILL 2013 hotel packages for both weekends that are roughly the same price at VIP passes and a couple hundred dollars less that what regular GA passes will sell for in January when people panic after seeing the lineup. I wouldn't be surprised if 20-25% of all ticket sales are packages. The slow sellouts indicate a large ticket inventory and there have been rumours of GV buying up thousands of rooms.
Radiohead/Arcade(wasn't AF informally announced and more of a Grammy rehearsal?) were both tiny venues with extreme demand. IIRC, Cohen and Jay-Z are the only 2 noteworthy acts that had full length shows in full sized venues with months of lead time that "broke" radius clause rules. Jay-z was a last minute booking with the March date already announced and Leonard Cohen was a unique fanbase/arrangement which Tollett has specifically addressed.
You actually want to count hotel packages against the general population of tickets? So < 1% of tickets that were included in these packages, YOU want to deem fair game in the world of 'who sells out their festival the fastest'. So any talk of 'its sold out' means nothing. Because over 75k worth of tickets being bought in a few hours is not impressive at all because the 200 tickets that are just sitting around due to the fact that people who make 6 figures do not buy shit til last minute makes it all moot. Well in YOUR EYES.
I mean a bee has a few thousand eyes to begin with, so they see ALL.
Taylor Swift could headline Friday ala Jack Johnson in 2008.

Me? I just wanted you to stay.
I lazily skimmed their tour dates without looking at any further details. It makes more sense now.
This is why I wonder how relevant the radius clause is these days. There are a few reasons the clause is in place and one of the biggest factors, originally, was making sure the festival was able to sell as many passes as possible. That's obviously not a concern anymore. With that being said, aside from the week in between Coachella weekends where acts on the lineup played all over Southern California, I don't recall too many acts from 2012 breaking the radius clause. I could be wrong though because I haven't gone back to look.
The ratio of tickets sold during pre-sales and ratio given to allocated to hotels are jealously guarded figures by GV. GV did say they sold 65k total between W1/W2 for the presale in summer 2011.
I don't mind if GV keeps their bragging rights of "sold out in X hours".
If you think it's a small percentage of tickets, why do the packages take MONTHS to sell when their prices are in line with VIP passes that sell instantly? The packages are cheaper than those folks that spend upwards of a grand for just for a single wristband.
I had a long converstion with a hotel manager in April that revealed that GV has THOUSANDS of rooms blockbooked. This is important to this thread because it explains why radius clauses are important and investment/profit motivations of GV to minimize area gigs other than short notice sideshows for the week in between. There is a California law that allows GV to price gauge under the loophole of "packages" when hotels cannot do the same directly.
