It was in their contract that they would get headliner-billing. See Outside Lands that year, where they were the "third" headliner playing a two day fest.
Kanye was by far the biggest act of the 3/4 headliners of 2011.

And as we all know, if it's been discussed, it's been resolved:
The reunited Black Sabbath was one of the planned headliners for this year's Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, but was forced to pull out just before yesterday's official lineup announcement due to guitarist Tony Iommi's recent lymphoma diagnosis, multiple industry sources tell Billboard.
It's unclear which artist was added as a last-minute replacement for Coachella, which will be headlined by Radiohead, the Black Keys and Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, and held for the first time over two weekends (April 13-15, April 20-22) in Indio, Calif.

Show a confirmed source or shut the fuck up about you "knowing" who replaced Sabbath.
I suppose it depends on how you classify stratosphere. Radio play and album sales, sure Kanye West is leagues beyond. But for a lot of the crowd at Coachella and the indie blogosphere I consider them close to equals. Both had albums in the top 5 or so of most respected websites top 10 albums of the decade. The turnout for Arcade Fire's set was absolutely massive for a Saturday night act with other sets going simultaneously. I can get why you'd say that they aren't though.

The Coachella Message Boards in a nutshell: where being rude and unhelpful goes hand in hand with calling others a waste.
The Rolling Stones - International Noise Conference: Los Angeles - Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers - Austra - Colin Stetson - The Pacific Rim Projekt - The National - Goat Rodeo - Hopscotch 2013- GY!BE - Beirut/Vampire Weekend
Amanda Palmer is now off the list, due to her cancelling of her 2013 touring plans.
We now return you to your regularly scheduled off-topic discussions...
That's because the original source was the Billboard article, which made it clear that the replacement wasn't known. Every other article cites that.
Unless there's another mystery media source out there that evades Google's tentacles, then the "confirmed sources" must be board jackoff #36 talking about how his dad heard from his hairdresser's sister about the replacement.
Which is only "confirmed" in fantasy message board land but still a pile of bullshit in reality.
Offer still stands: SOURCE OR GTFO.
