Unless the radio stations in Lansing, MI are really on top of things, Alt-J isn't blowing up on modern rock radio. By early 2011 Mumford & Sons were everywhere - in addition to the singles, they got a lot of attention from the Grammy awards and their first album hit #2 on Billboard after their performance on that televised craptacular. So sure, if Alt-J starts burning up the charts and lands themselves in a prime spot on a huge ratings fest like the Grammys, then you might have a point. M&S also made imminently catchy/pop-friendly music that quickly got them a huge following among the casual music fan/festival set. I don't see the same crowd of teens and collegiate bros cottoning on to a band that consists of some guy making odd yelps and chirps in lieu of lyrics half the time.
I swear a year ago at this time I got excited by a lot of the rumored names. This year I'm shrugging nearly everything off. I'll take a Killers confirmation at this point just so I have something to look forward to
I don't feel like digging but I remember a TON of "who the fuck are Mumford & Sons and what are they doing on the 2nd row" around here in 2011 when the lineup dropped.
Also - I don't listen to the radio much, thanks. I'm just saying Alt-J is being incredibly hyped up right now and they'll probably likewise have their egos undeservedly stroked by Goldenvoice when the poster comes out in January. That's all I'm saying, so get off my dick.
2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2012b, 2013a
Mumford and Sons were second to Black Keys on Alt Nation on Sirius XM as 2010 was ending. Alt-J just started getting played less than a week ago and people r so divided on them. Alt-J will be in the Mojave or Gobi. That's my guess
Who's Alt-J?
Last.fm
Big Boi/Killer Mike - 5/20 - Rialto Theatre
The Black Angels - 5/22 - Hotel Congress
Devo - 5/24 - Rialto Theatre
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - 5/30 - Rialto Theatre
There are lots of bands that get incredible amounts of hype. They don't all wind up subheadlining.
You may be right. Who knows, Alt-J may blow up in the next 6 weeks and wind up second row. But comparing them to Mumford & Sons in 2011, when the only similarity between the two is the number of albums they've put out by this point in their respective careers, is crazy.
And speaking of undeservedly hyped bands, hey, Alabama Shakes.
Yeah, they made a pretty bad record which the music press in the UK love for some reason. They are now blowing up according to some metric that may be based on rock radio play in a dying part of the country. They are also discussed directly above in this thread. Apparently you are noticing that someone else posted about Alabama Shakes earlier in the thread. Sorry I missed that, it does help if the person that posted said info bothers to type out the band's name in their post rather than just giving a link so people can know what they are talking about and can easily be searched.
Look, buffoons. AltJ isn't going to be on the second line of any poster. Anywhere. Not with all the other "second line" rumoured acts. YYYs. Grizzly Bear. Sigur Ros. Passion Pit for fucks sake. Think about it.
