Even if you hate everything else he did--which I was in agreement about until around 2007--you gotta give him credit for The Social Network score. The montage sequences are given a fantastic aesthetic thanks to his work.

What changed your opinion about NIN in 2007? Was it a particular album, seeing them live, or something else altogether?

(a) I had started dating Ivy and she would occasionally play a song that I didn't find quite as whiny and annoying as most of his catalog, but particularly (b) a friend had an extra ticket to Lights In The Sky at the Forum. Not a great venue but a perfect viewing position, and seeing him play live finally not whipping his long hair around and throwing keyboards at the end of every song sold me on him. The motherfucker had made all the music I heard that night ALONE. Just him. And he'd managed to take this art he'd created single-handedly and turn it into an almost religious devotion from his fans. As an egotist, I couldn't deny the mastery of it.

I've had to face myself over the past couple of years, and realize I really only like some of two Nine Inch Nails albums. There's an unbelievable amount of filler in his catalog. Still a very good live act.
