A cryptic message on the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival website has fans and Indio city officials wondering what its Goldenvoice promoters plan to announce tonight.

The message simply says, “Tuesday 6 p.m. PDT.”

It's not on Goldenvoice's website for its Stagecoach country festival.

The Indio City Council is due to meet Wednesday to discuss the status of two ad hoc committees related to the event. One handles negotiations between the promoters and the city, the other deals with the festivals' impact on residents. The status reports became more significant after Councilman Sam Torres announced plans to place a measure on the November ballot to tax admissions on nonprofit events attracting 2,500 or more people.

Torres rescinded his support for the idea after Goldenvoice threatened to move out of Indio after the 2013 festivals if the measure qualified for the ballot. Goldenvoice President Paul Tollett then said he looked forward to meeting with Indio officials about future festivals.

But Tollett said before the announcement of the Wednesday ad hoc committee updates that a national announcement was planned for this week, although he didn't say what the announcement would be.

Indio officials say they don't know, either, although they're curious. Tollett didn't respond Monday to an email question about the website posting.

“To tell you the truth, I don't know what that's about,” said City Manager Dan Martinez, who helps negotiate with Goldenvoice for the city. “I would be guessing, speculating because I truly don't know.”

Speculation on the Coachella message board and Twitter has included chatter about the announcement of a third Coachella weekend, a move farther east in the Coachella Valley, news about a new festival at the Great Park in Irvine, and a Rolling Stones tour date.

Torres, who incurred the wrath of Goldenvoice officials with his tax proposal, said he wouldn't be surprised if Goldenvoice announced a third Coachella weekend, but he's hoping for news about a new concert coming to Indio.

“Certainly if they were looking at something in October or November, that would be great,” he said. “I think we would be supportive of seeing more.”

Councilman Mike Wilson guesses Goldenvoice will announce a new “twist,” perhaps involving an environmental impact report on its attempt to purchase property around the Empire Polo Club.

“The EIR is going to tell us a lot in terms of capacity to expand, what other things we need to do to mitigate the impact (of the festivals),” he said.

Neither Wilson nor Torres expect an announcement about suspending the festivals in 2014.

"These aren't guys who take breaks," Torres said.
