American viewers didn't have a chance to see all of the closing ceremony for the London 2012 Olympics after NBC cut away to air a new sitcom, but England called on the Who for a headline performance, with support from the Spice Girls, Muse, Fatboy Slim and more.

NBC nixed performances by the Who, Ray Davies and Muse for a commercial-free airing of the new show Animal Practice, a decision that sparked no small amount of vitriol online. More's the pity: Many countries would have exhausted their star power after an event like the Olympics opening ceremony, but England showed it had plenty left in reserve when it concluded the games last night in London with "A Symphony of British Music."

NBC was criticized for interrupting the show with a preview for Animal Practice, as well as for bumping Muse, Ray Davies of The Kinks and The Who.

At 11 p.m., NBC broadcast cut away to a preview of the new comedy Animal Practice.

“That concludes the closing ceremony,” host Bob Costas said before the break. We’ll be back from Olympic Stadium in about an hour for the London closing party, featuring The Who,” he said. “Stay tuned now for a full episode of Animal Practice, a new NBC comedy, presented commercial free.”

After the break, Costas reported told audiences the closing ceremony would actually air an hour later, following a sneak preview of Animal Practice and local news. The Who, the final act, was not broadcast until after midnight.

Naturally, critics took to Twitter, specifically #NBCFail.

“DEAR NBC. Interrupting the Olympic closing ceremony for an hr to air a show about a fictional animal dr. before it ends is a disgrace. Shame on you,” Tweeted Glee’s Kevin McHale.

“#NBCFail #AnimalPractice is now the most hated show in America before the first episode. Amazing.”

NBC did air the Who's performance eventually. It was really late at night and I wasn't paying much attention to actual time. They sounded good.

My 15 year old daughter was the only one who knew who the hell she was.

I promised the Who, based on concertgoer's post last night, to my wife 18 year old son, hoping for a redemption performance for that abysmal SuperBowl halftime and looked like an ass....again.

The Who were amazing. Absolutely owned it. The staging/fireworks to close it out worked so well. Made me so excited to see them in January.

NBC can suck dicks. Waiting to air everything in primetime is ridiculous. You can do recaps then sure, but in the day and age of DVR in conjunction with social media everything should LIVE.
