I am totally down for a meat-and-potatoes U2 rock record, and so far this thing is good.

^ Under Preferences > Store select 'Show Cloud purchases' and it should appear.

The California song is the best thing here, one of their best songs in ages. But there's a lot of mediocre stuff surrounding it, as usual.

For me The Troubles is the best thing they've recorded in this millennium. The entire album is good, even the stuff produced by Tedder. The standout songs are the Danger Mouse ones. I really can't wait to hear these live.

Agreed about The Troubles. That song surpassed Moment of Surrender as their best song from this century for me. I can imagine/wish for something like With or Without You--->The Troubles--->Love is Blindness closing out shows this tour. Cedarwood Road is going to just flat out rock live.

You've got to be kidding. That's easily the worst song I've heard all year.

It's good not great U2, and -- shocker -- people who like U2 also like it. Among latter day U2 albums, it's better than NLOTH, probably the same or slightly better than HTDAAB, and not as good as ATYCLB. Nowhere as good as their '90s or '80s stuff. Most of the music critics have gone crazy with #thinkpieces about the distribution and announcement of the album (obligatory Beyonce reference), and very few are commenting on the music, which if we are honest, exists as an afterthought for launching a new tour anyway. To some extent, U2 have themselves to blame -- by straining for continued relevancy (which they probably couldn't come up with anyway -- quick name an rock/pop artist not named Bob Dylan who put out a masterpiece in their fourth decade of existence) and commercial domination (which doesn't really exist anymore because no one pays for music) -- they haven't allowed themselves to gracefully age into their generation's answer to the Stones. I mean, if Twitter had existed in 1995, would anyone think to care to shit all over Voodoo Lounge because it wasn't as good as Some Girls, much less Exile? No, because the Stones already took the cash from the top of the dresser, and everyone was okay with them showing up and being the Stones and putting out a serviceable rock album.

But this is the point entirely. The album itself is a gimmicky concept (Songs of Innocence??) that was poorly executed (see the Beach Boys garbage in California), but it could have been pretty much ignored if it wasn't coupled with a gimmicky media strategy that was also poorly executed. NLOTH is the only album that's even close to as bad as this one, but for some reason they decided everyone with an Apple product should be forced to own it.

Tom Petty quietly put out a serviceable rock album this year, they should take notes from him.

No one should expect a masterpiece from U2 these days, but no way in hell is this worse than or even close to as bad as NLOTH, which was basically the pinnacle of pompous Eno garbage (and I say that as someone who loves Brian Eno). Even U2 themselves stopped playing almost everything from it at the end of their tour supporting the album. There are several songs here that I can see kicking ass in a live setting, especially "Iris" and "Raised By Wolves". It's pretty safe arena rock by U2 standards that I doubt I'll even be playing 5 years from now, but at this point, I'll gladly take that. If you hate U2, you'll hate this, but this is my favorite LP since ATYCLB.

"California" is the low point for me, though. Might be a more embarrassing California-themed anthem than anything the Red Hot Chili Peppers have put out in the last 15 years.

Yeah this album is way better than the last two. Can't wait to see U2 for the first time next year.

Through 6 of the 11 songs... Underwhelmed. Maybe I'm not appreciating it because it's free.

It's definitely my favorite U2 album since ATYCLB. Most of it is classic U2 though so if you don't like the band this record will not change that.

I thought it would be available to download for free through iTunes, I did not think it would be on my phone this morning. Guess I'll give it a listen.

That's awfully big-brotherly of Apple to do that for you and millions of others.

Its not like you cant delete it. If it was automatically downloaded, you can swipe the tracks off. If it just has the cloud logo next to it, its not even on your phone unless you choose to download it.

ok, that's a little better than people have been reporting.

still, though. this redefines "commercial" albums.
