Jirdan, that's nothing. I'm following the Eisley clan on Facebook and Instagram. Four 20's year old siblings all had babes within a few months of each other and they're always dressing up their babies in the cutest dresses and outfits and it makes me want to have another baby so badly. (I won't because I can't really do that right now but it makes me want to)

    This is so freaking awesome.

    https://medium.com/thoughts-on-creativity/6f4cb1886d41

Why do we do this? Because in the age of iPads and Netflix, we don’t want our kids to lose their sense of wonder and imagination. In a time when the answers to all the world’s questions are a web-search away, we want our kids to experience a little mystery. All it takes is some time and energy, creativity, and a few plastic dinosaurs.

Sometimes I wish I had kids just so I could hit them. Not because I want to beat up my own children, but because it annoys me that people don't do it anymore.

Elf on the Shelf always creeped me out. I never liked the idea of telling my daughter she was being monitored by a creepy little elf that moved mysteriously around the house.

What's suitable punishment for an 11 y/o cutting a giant hole in a new pair of jeans and lying about it so she doesn't have to wear them? I told her I would defer to the internet for sentencing.

Story: A few months back, we bought her jeans that she said she liked at the store. She comes home, rips the tags off and put them in her drawer and never wears them saying that she hates them. In agreement to buying new shorts and pants (which she needs) last weekend she committed to wearing these jeans as part of the rotation. This morning, I find them in the trash and I ask her why. She says there's a hole in them that just appeared after they came out of the dryer (lol, why would they ever be in the dryer, right?). It's clearly a man-made hole, so I ask what she used to cut them with. She responds with a half-lie, so I ask again and she finally comes clean saying she used scissors and her fingers to rip them.

The cost of her jeans (or if they were really expensive, some % of it) coming out of her allowance, if she has one. If no allowance, an extra allotment of chores priced at some sort of denomination for a certain amount of time until the price or % of the price is payed for. (And a discussion of the value of things and why you don't destroy them etc)

Well, she hates them. Forcing her to wear them once repaired isn't a fair punishment. If that was the punishment, the lesson would be: "If you buy something, you have to commit to it no matter what and no matter how much you hate it." The punishment should be for destroying something that cost her parent's money so that she starts to understand the value of things. The lesson should be that there are consequences for destroying property ($) and also that you should keep the tags on clothes if you think you might not want them!

I don't think it's an unfair punishment. She agreed to wear them as a negotiation to get new clothes. I think she should still have to stick to that agreement at least once, regardless of how embarrassed she might be by it. Then the next time they are in the store, she won't agree to buy something she isn't that excited to wear.

I guess I viewed the punishment as being correlated to the destruction of property and not to the breach of contract.

That's a mystery. It could have been that she just rushed her decision at the store without thinking about it. It could also be that she subsequently learned that those jeans aren't as cool as others. The only thing she tells us is that she doesn't like the material.

Reimbursing us the cost is a no brainer which directly corresponds with the crime. Punishment for the second part, the lying and dishonest act itself, is still up for grabs. Maybe keeping the new shorts we bought her this weekend from her for a couple weeks?

I'm guessing making her wear the ripped jeans for a week is a bit over the top....

I think having her pay for the cost of the jeans or doing chores to work off the cost sends the right message about being careful with purchases and how you need to work for the things you want to buy. Forcing her to wear them may be less effective in driving that lesson home. As far as the lying goes, I think the withholding of the other item she wants to wear (the shorts) is a good idea.

I don't know what kind of punishment should go with the lying, since my dad just always encouraged me to get better at deceiving my mom and not getting caught.

Also, Wes, nothing be suggested here is too extreme or over the top. Making her wear them would teach her about how agreements work. What Cara's suggesting will make her think twice about being deceiving in the future, unless she fucking loves doing chores and housework. Also, make her clean up the dog shit in my back yard.

My seventeen year old daughter seems to wear ripped jeans (knee area) exclusively. She and her friends buy them this way.

If the rips are in the right spots, you'll probably be able to get your money back on ebay.

    Good luck!
