Thread: Nolan Vs Burton

  1. #1

    Default Nolan Vs Burton

simply, who's Batman films were the best overall?
I think it would be wise to focus on their first two films,
Tim Burton's 89 Batman (with Jack Nicholson),
    and following Batman Returns,
    or
    and Christopher Nolan's
Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.

Here's an interesting article about the subject:

Despite nostalgia, if you revisit Burton's two movies, they are absolute fucking messes.

I think nostalgia really does give Burton's films a lot more credit than they deserve but Keaton and Nicholson are such a classic pair

The difference between Nolan's Gotham City and Burton's is like night and day. I prefer Burton's weird/colorful Gotham.

Something that has nothing to do with this thread: I've been driving around listening to the Ed Wood soundtrack for about a month.
    Whiskey Sour

    2 oz blended whiskey
    Juice of 1/2 lemon
    1/2 tsp powdered sugar
    1 cherry
    1/2 slice lemon

Shake blended whiskey, juice of lemon, and powdered sugar with ice and strain into a whiskey sour glass. Decorate with the half-slice of lemon, top with the cherry, and serve.

I think Nolan's take on Batman was given more intellectual weight by critics and audiences than it deserved (oh no! you have to choose who to save! ethics and shit, man! plus, 9/11 security state blah blah blah), but I haven't been able to tolerate any Tim Burton movie not named Ed Wood, so this one was easy for me.

That many prefer the Burton films? REALLY? They haven't aged well at all. Also, all that camp that people hate about Batman Forever and Batman & Robin? The roots of it lie in those Burton movies.

    Also:

"Anyone who knows me knows I would never read a comic book" - Tim Burton.

I actually like that quote from Burton, I've never been able to get into most comics myself, especially all of the "classic" ones. The idea of a narrative about the same characters constantly dying and being resurrected and continuing for decades sounds really mundane. Basically Cracked has ruined me to comics. I feel like a movie that actually follows some of these comics word for word would be awesome for a ten year old but that's about it. Moore's work and other good graphic novels are obviously excluded

The point is that someone who actively hates comic books probably shouldn't be adapting them, because he lacks any understanding necessary to flesh the characters out in another medium.

There are a lot things that shouldn't happen in movies but that doesn't stop Hollywood. Burton's Batman is like a nice fluke.

I feel anything past "Sleepy Hollow" should not be considered as work by Burton. It's been all downhill since then.

Change that to anything past "Ed Wood." Honestly, the dude has been riding the goodwill from his late 80's/early 90's heyday to glory. Maybe "Dark Shadows" will end that?

I'm one of the few Burton fans who liked Big Fish and was hoping to see him continue in that direction, at least away from hopelessly clinging to nostalgic middle school creepy Johnny Depp bullshit. I hold no expectations for Dark Shadows, how could anyone, especially with Frankenweenie coming out?

Edit: I'm still a little excited for that movie because I got the hots for Eva Green

I blame Tim Burton for wearing me out on Johnny Depp. He's a great performer, but everytime I see him in a waaaaaacky costume in a Burton re-visioning of children's book or whatever, I take him for granted much more.

Also, to speak of Nolan, everyone loves his Batman movies, but his real gem is "The Prestige."

Just throwing that one out there.

I know this is slowly heading off-topic, but I just came to the realization that Nolan has became the director that everyone in the media assumed Shyamalan would be after "The Sixth Sense" was all the rage.
