Thread: The SECOND BEST festival??

  1. #1

    Default The SECOND BEST festival??

I know we all agree that Coachella is the best festival there is and one of the greatest parts of our lives. I am always sooo devasted every year when Coachella ends and am always looking for other festivals to tide me over until it is April again.

I went to Lollapalooza last year, and though it was fun, it was totally lacking the vibe that you get a Coachella. It was a rowdy crowd as opposed to the friendly, music-loving crowd at Coachella.

Just wanting some suggestions on other good festivals throughout the year? ACL, etc?? I'm interested to hear reviews.

The advantage of festivals like Coachella and Bonnaroo over festivals like Lollapolooza and Street Scene Is that they're held in the middle of no where. This means attending entails camping for most and a multi-hour drive for everyone with only a few anomolies being able to return to the comfort fo their own homes. This also means most people will be attending for the duration of the festival due to logistics, thus weeding out the more common folk. When a festival is centrally located in amajor city all kinds of yahoos come out to play.

Ive only been to Sasquatch Festival, which seemed pretty awesome to me... Not as much choice as Coachella sounds like... its fairly straight forward. I will be hitting up Coachella, Sasquatch and Hurricane Festival this year...so ill have more input later...hehe

Everything in Europe that Coachella modeled itself after is usually solid. So if you ever go overseas during the summer you might want to look into these festivals. I will provide line ups also and what country they take place in.

Nicely done Suprefan. One comment; T in The Park is most definitely NOT in England. It's near Kinross in Scotland, about 40 minutes north of Edinburgh.

It would be like saying Coachella is in Canada.

I was putting England as an general area mostly, but yeah a few of these are in Ireland/Scotland. Fixed it though.

Coachella is the only one pushing the standards up there. Every other U.S. festival has to compare to Coachella or its s**t now. Coachella is the U.S. version of Glastonbury pretty much now.

Jesus, I thought all the stuffy Europeans looked down on us because of Linkin Park and Evanescence, yet those shit bands get booked for all their festivals, not ours.

And how many of us still end up being jealous by what Europe offers every summer? Pretty much all of us. Roo' and Vegoose are the same thing just on different ends of the country.

Theyre all equally jealous of 'chella's Rage and 'roo's Police, the grass is always greener on the other side of the meadow.

This also means most people will be attending for the duration of the festival due to logistics, thus weeding out the more common folk. When a festival is centrally located in amajor city all kinds of yahoos come out to play.
yes, this is exactly what i witnessed. lots of kids in chicago just came to the festival so something to do. i, needless to say, came for the music. i think it is much better to go to one where you have to work for it a little bit! definitely weeds out those who are not there for music and are solely there to party.

LAUGHING MY ASS OFF!! I definitely thought the same thing when I saw that Linkin Park was headlining one of the festivals. I love it.

Looking at the line-up, the Pitchfork festival is the one I really want to start going to now (in additional to Coachella, of course). Plus, it doesn't have the jam band or yuppie factor of Lolla. Here's the 2007 line-up so far:

    Friday, July 13:

    Sonic Youth performs Daydream Nation

    Saturday, July 14:

    Cat Power
    Clipse
    Iron and Wine
    Girl Talk
    Grizzly Bear
    Battles
    Professor Murder

    Sunday, July 15:

    New Pornographers
    Stephen Malkmus
    De La Soul
    Of Montreal
    Jamie Lidell
    The Ponys
    Ken Vandermark's Powerhouse Sound

Last year I think they pulled Os Mutantes, Spoon and Yo La Tengo after the initial anouncment, so this looks like it'll just keep getting better. Or maybe it's just the idea of seeing Clipse in between Iron and Wine and Cat Power.

I've also always wanted to go to Fuji Rock. It just seems like it'd be cool to go to a festival in Japan. Anyone been?

I am going to the Virgin Festival in Baltimore again this year. It's still going through growing pains, but I like that it's been expanded to two days. Only the headliners have been announced so far, but Saturday will be nice with the Beastie Boys and The Police. Not sure how I'm liking One Lone Bald Pumpkin (with whomever he can find that can stand him long enough to back him) headlining Sunday, but other acts that day will hopefully be worth checking out.

I did like the layout of this festival last year, and it was relatively uncrowded (45,000 people estimated), but I don't think it will ever be on the same level as Coachella. Still, it's an hour drive for me, so I do like the convenience of it. LOL

we are going to do the european fest 08 or 09 but bonnaroo is always fun, and we made the first and last vegoose ... vegoose is like swsx where a lot of the shows are at clubs late night and no camping, but it was a fun time and we are going to hit it again this year if they have it .... cr***** oh and by the way, for the few jam band fans here on the coachella board, check out this new fest for colorado this year ... we will go to it after waka, and the roo, so i will post a review if anyone cares ... cr****http://www.trancegressionfest.com/

Slightly different. The type of lineups are the same, but Vegoose is in Vegas...and on Halloween. That way it's only half hippie, the other half being Borat and Elvis and devils and such.
