Nope. I'm the guy who thinks Radiohead hit their peak in 2001. And if "growing the fuck up" involves blindly bowing at the altar of Maynard or Thom without recognizing a differentiation in the quality of their music and live shows over time, I'll pass. "Your" certainly all growed up though.

Fair enough. I'm of the opinion that you're wrong but, I think what's important here is to recognize that while we might have different feelings about certain aspects of the band, I think what we can agree on is that we love this band. There isn't a tool thread that goes by where the conversation doesn't ultimately devolve into arguments over a few key things: Maynard, setlists, and the bands performance. I think it gets lost that we all deeply love this band.

I think that there are two camps of people when it comes to Tool:
There are those who have criticisms of certain aspects of the band whether it be Maynard's voice, the relatively unchanging setlists, and sometimes the band's performance as a whole.
And there are those who just don't care about it that much.

And while I think legitimate arguments could be made for both sides, we all so easily forget that deep down we all love this band. I'm hoping this thread will continue the intelligent discussion for as long as possible.

I'm 23 years old now. Discovered Tool when I was 16. I have never gotten a chance to see them live. Tool is my favorite band and I do enjoy reading the bickering you share about how their show has gone down hill but the truth is there are people like me out there that couldn't give a fuck about what you have to say. I feel I am running out of time to see my favorite band live. I am going to say that this next album they are working on is probably going to be their last followed by their last tour. If Tool is on the bill next Coachella it will be 100% the reason I attend. I will probably camp the stage all day as well.

My understanding is that Maynard has never really enjoyed the spot light when it came to being in Tool because he was surrounded by three other AMAZING musicians. Personally Danny is my favorite followed by Adam.

He is an artist, and you critique his medium. If you dont like it, dont go. Everyone matures, sorry that 40 year old men cant paint their body black and white and seizure on stage while screaming. Sorry that somone your age still needs to witness that.

New album + tool at coachella would be great. Id rather se them somewhere that wont restrict the setlist to 1:45.

Every time that i've seen them Maynard has hardly been the thing i focus on. I either watch Danny or I watch their visuals. To me the overall experience is what is important, not one member trying to outdo another.

I saw Tool in Reno on their latest tour, and they did Ticks and Leeches, which my friend who is a Tool fanatic told me they haven't done much live because it's so hard on Maynard's voice. Ticks and Leeches sounded great so evidently he still has the pipes. I was fortunate enough to see Tool in the 90's, (96/97) and I think as the whole the band sounds better now (more cohesive, more intense) than they did then. Also, I think its fucking sweet how he stands in the back by Danny Carey, he does it in order to focus the attention on the whole band, not just him. When I saw them in the 90s, Maynard was wearing nothing but tidy widys and covered head to toe in purple paint, those days are long gone.

MJK only seems to be able to sing an hour at any of his shows now. One of th eother members of TOOL told a magazine interview they change their setlist to better pace the singing parts with instrumental interludes.
