Question Hotels in the area already booked for 2013?!?

I normally book our hotel room a year in advance because we always stay at the same place. I was just about to do that and it turns out that they have NO ROOMS AVAILABLE either the 2nd or 3rd weekends in April of next year. So I did a little searching and it turns out that every hotel on the shuttle lines is sold out for those weekends in 2013.

That seems ridiculous, even considering the demand for wristbands, etc. It makes me wonder if Golden Voice or someone blocked a bunch of rooms so that they could sell more packages next year.

    Anyone know what's going on??

Maybe they just aren't for sale yet. Most only open bookings 11 months out. Why not just pick up the phone and call?

I did call. The rates haven't been released yet. Kind of weird because I booked around this same time last year but I guess I'll just be patient. I just like to take care of it early so I don't have to worry about it later.

I have noticed that several of the hotels that are part of the travel packages won't let you book, says no rooms available.

Several hotels in palm desert and la quinta appear to be sold out for what will most likely be weekend one and the others have already raised their rates. I ended up booking at a hotel in Palm Springs that is within walking distance to the shuttle stop.

I'm sure this has been discussed to death, but as a first time attendee this year, I am SO GLAD we went with car camping. If you prepare the right way it's the perfect setup. We were a 10 minute walk from any stage, had our own shower and charger and never waited in line for anything. The security check getting in off the shuttle is way more thorough than the one coming in from the campground. I spent one day at a condo with some friends and it was the worst part of my whole experience. Pool was fun, but there was so much dead time just waiting for the shuttle, sitting in the shuttle, waiting in security lines, getting cavity searched at the line.

    Car camping for life.

Shit man. Last year I didn't book until the day that the dates were announced and I thought that was early. I guess I better get on that if they're already raising rates for those weekends.

just wait until motel 6 makes the dates available. they are never more than $100/night, never jack their rates up like every other place out there.

I've booked the whole lot - just in case, you know. Every weekend in April in a 25 mile radius for the rest of time.

Will do, thanks Steve. That will save me a lot of money, my g/f and I paid around $180 per night this year at Holiday Inn Express Palm Desert and I booked a year in advance. What city is the motel 6 in?

Getting a hotel AND a Car camping spot this year. I have a high maintenance g/f so she needs to have a shower and bed unfortunately. But she can sleep in the hotel every night with her friends while the homies and I sleep in the camping spot. And I'll sleep in the hotel one night to get a good night's sleep, and shower there and shit.

I can always cancel the hotel reservations too since they usually don't make you pay anything until check in.

I like that idea of both. As long as your girl has company and is safe driving.

Not having to drive and get ready was sooo good. I never want to leave the air conditioned hotel room when it's hot as fuck outside and end up getting to chella around 3-4pm sometimes...then I have to come down from my geeking before I drive back.

Until this last year, I was a champagne and hot tub suite guy spending 2000 for a weekend at a hotel. I'll do that in Vegas and camp at chella. Don't be slipping on that weekend one shit this year mang.

My group also discussed a car camping + hotel combo.

I think the idea sounds better than it actually is, but we might do it anyway. It's good to have the campground to crash in between sets, but realistically most of your time at the campground is before the shows start and after. And if you have a hotel, it'd be wasteful to spend that off time at the festival. But I guess it works if you have a group and some people want to camp and some hotel. And I think to really make it work you'd need two cars. One to get into car camping and one to park so we don't have to worry about shuttles. You inevitably end up meeting people at camp that want to come party at the condo, and many don't have shuttle passes, so a second car comes in handy. We'd probably also need two stashes so we don't get shit taken away at the entrance to the festival like this year.

I agree Goat. I always voted hotel/house for the comfort reasons but nothing beats camping's proximity to the festival gates.

Also, camping makes it so easy to go see those early acts (even if no one else in your crew is ready), and then you can leave and go relax or shower or do whatever you want. Staying at a house/hotel with a big crew (while insanely fun) was always a pain in the fucking ass for me. Most of the time no one wants to see the acts at 12 and like Goat says you end up getting in around 3-4 with all the other shmucks.

After 2010 when I begged my group to get moving and get to the festival, and they fucked around so much so that we missed Yeasayer at 4:30(?), I made sure to stay somewhere where I can leave my friends if they aren't ready. Aka camping. Obviously 2010 was a clusterfuck year and we spent almost 2 hours in line, but still. I like to be there at gates everyday.

The Motel 6 in at Washington and the 10 already has the dates available. They are cheap. The Comfort Suites next to it not so much.

The place I stayed in this year (across the street from shuttle) has wised up and has tripled their rates already for the 12th weekend. Hopefully I can sneak in the second weekend dates but probably not since they know it's two weekends now.

closest are in indio and one right off of I-10 and washington, which was my preferred location until i started rv'ing it. easiest drive in with pretty much a direct shot up washington then cut over on 50th.

Yea man the major downside of having a hotel is that we got there at 3 pm everyday this year. Definitely missed out on a few people I wanted to see, Do Lab especially. That's why I had the idea of getting the camping spot + hotel. I want to just camp and not even get a hotel, but the heat this year and the fact that all my friends were DEAD tired on Sunday made my g/f even more convinced that she never wants to camp lol. So I'll just be safe and get both.

FOR SURE going weekend one this year, do we all agree that weekend one will be April 12-14?

You have on site RV access? Damn you're lucky man. An RV would be the way to go for Coachella

you can reserve now and cancel up until 6pm the day of check in if you go the motel 6 route. just book both weekends in the middle of the month to be safe, cancel whatever you won't need when closer to the fest.

I emailed the Holiday Inn Palm Desert where I've set up camp the last two years and they plan to start taking reservations next week. Pretty sure that's code for 'no more super cheap rates by booking super early'.

I would call and check directly with them. Last year a lot of hotels (not sure about Motel 6) charged when you made the reservation and were non refundable.

Motel 6 doesn't charge you until you check in or fail to cancel by 6 pm the day you're supposed to check in.
