Of the five Coachella's I've gone to...the best by far was the one people bitched about the lineup the most before hand (2008), and the worst by far was the one the board harpies were happiest with prior to the fest (2010)...

Fan favorites disappoint, underrated artists impress, and newbies always come out of nowhere to deliver fantastic sets.

2013 will most likely be fantastic regardless of who the headliners are.

And I for one, having never seen them, have no problem with Green Day...I fail to see how the differ from dozens of Punk-Pop acts that have already graced Coachella's stages over the years aside from the fact that they have way more fans, and often, better hooks.

I would be ecstatic with a Green Day, Stones, Daft Punk headlining trio.

Curious if Talking Heads might be taking an offer seriously.

Bob is not necessarily bad live . . . just vastly different than what casual fans may expect going in. Whatever else you can say of Dylan and what's left of his voice at this point, his band is ace and you're going to hear "Like A Rolling Stone."

He's not going to headline Coachella, but it would be lovely to have him play a Leonard Cohen type slot one year.

Pearl Jam is one of the only sure-shots with it being the 20 year anniversary of the show at the Polo Grounds and the new album in the works. With that said, I really hope they dont waste another headliner slot with a punk band like Green Day.

I'd rather there "FM Radio" headliner be I can see GV booking The Killers, RHCP, or MMJ. Shit, even Phoenix, although I doubt they're at that level yet.

Throw one of them with Pearl Jam and Daft or Outkast and I'd be one of the many happy campers there.

So how big is the demand for Pearl Jam in the age group of Coachella-goers under the age of 25? That's an honest question, not sarcasm. Just curious. I would explain why, but I'd just make the wolves on here angrier.

Not very big I'd imagine. If it wasn't at the point were most attendees were buying tickets prior to the lineup dropping then I'd say otherwise, but I see them getting a very casual reception.

That's what I was thinking too. Wouldn't that be a big factor for Coachella's organizers? To appeal to that age group, I mean. Let's face it, as far as headliners go, Green Day holds more popularity/nostalgia with the college crowd than Pearl Jam. Pearl Jam was dad's classic rock as far as what late 80s/early 90s kids considered to be cool back then (and today for that matter). I bring this up because I've been asking friends if they care for Pearl Jam and so far the general response has been something along the lines of "meh". As far as headliners go, Missy Elliot + Timbaland would be a hit, as would be Daft Punk, as would The Rolling Stones because obviously the Stones transcend generations.
Just some thoughts and observations.
Then again, I guess the headliners wouldn't matter considering the massive amount of 2013 passes that already sold.

^ Headliners are meant to appeal to all age groups not just the under 25 crowd. People from 12-40 listen to the black keys, radiohead, and dre. Best thing for coachella is to get the big name headliners to reinforce the idea that coachella is the premier festival in the states. Acts that would suggest this would be: The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Waters & Gilmour, Pearl Jam, Green Day, Depeche Mode, RHCP, Daft Punk, Outkast, U2.

At Made In America the other week, my friend said the crowd pretty much cleared out after Drake before Pearl Jam. There were maybe half as many people there.

I think Pearl Jam is really, really, tricky for all the reasons people have mentioned. Acts like Prince, McCartney, Waters, etc are legends. Dre/Snoop and Gorillaz were (or more technically, one was and one was supposed to be) such absolute spectacles that they would appeal to even those who don't like their music. And then you have The Black Keys, Radiohead, Arcade Fire, Jay-Z type acts that might skew one way generationally, but are accessible and loved by all ages.

For the same reason that Coachella doesn't generally book headliners that could only really to the younger set (Drake and Lil' Wayne, Rihanna, or something like that), is the same reason that I don't think they'll book Pearl Jam. Pearl Jam, like Soundgarden (another act I've always felt this way about) appeals mostly to one generation, but does not have that overarching "legend" status. BUT if they did play, they'd have to be headliners. So they could headline, but I don't think they will. If their new album receives significant airplay on the radio, then sure, maybe, but I just don't see it happening.

I think the boardies, on average, have a very strong knowledge of music outside their time, but I don't think the average attendee knows nearly as much about music as you all do. I honestly would guess that for many Coachella attendees under the age of 25, they couldn't even name the radio hits like Jeremy or Last Kiss as Pearl Jam songs, let alone be excited to sit through a two hour set. Likewise, I don't think anybody over 25 gives a shit about Drake. Therefore, I doubt either will really be a strong headliner contender. Could be wrong.
