I'll give him credit- the justifications for why certain acts weren't going to play Coachella made me laugh out loud more than once.
Just wait til Bumblebee starts opining about monetary issues.

He also seems to think that Bloc Party has a shot to headline somehow.

CrazyNo. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs have a way better chance at headlining than Bloc Party ever will. And I think Bloc Party as a sub headliner is still very far off. I, personally think either Phoenix or YYYs could headline this year (my opinion of course), but is it going to happen? No. not realistically.

So let's say GV actually managed to book The Rolling Stones and Daft Punk. Does that give what some would call a weak headliner, e.g., Phoenix or the YYY's, more of a chance to headline? Honest question.
Drewski's right. Bloc Party is barely at a sub headliner level, if even that. YYYs and Phoenix however could fill a headlining spot if they got some other giant ass act to headline, such as Daft Punk or the Rolling Stones. And if they had both there, YYYs and Phoenix could fill the extra day. I wouldn't mind at all if that poster had YYYs headlining. I just don't see it happening.
i'm assuming if any of them headline, it's because the other two headliners are so strong.
as for whether or not it's possible, YYYs were subheadliners in '06, then they were bumped down to sub-sub in '09.
but yeah, Bloc Party could never subheadline Coachella:
i suppose if the YYYs & Franz & Artic Monkeys & Interpol all were bumped down a spot upon their return, I guess Bloc Party could too. They were sub-sub in '06 are they really less relevant in 2012/13? didn't they just headline day of the dead or something at the large LA park venue?
The 06 poster is a mess (I hate that they never officially added Kanye to it) and it looked like this by the end:
They couldn't even sub headline at their most popular....

Me? I just wanted you to stay.
that's like saying that Portishead couldn't headline. They were the headliners until late adds came aboard.
Same with Bloc Party. They were sub-subs until the Massive Attack & Madonna add. YYYs got bumped also. and to the topic of discussion the poster used to sell tickets is more relevant than the last minute poster made for the festival entrance.
You should probably think through the logic of "X band had Y status on the poster until they were bumped by more popular adds in order to sell more tickets" before you use it to make a case for the relative popularity of X band.
Massive Attack would not headline.
upcoming
Bjork doing Biophilia, 6/2 Hollywood Palladium, Los Angeles, CA
Outside Lands, 8/9-11 Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, CA
--almost, almost, almost the real thing
they headlined Sasquatch year before last, and they subbed chella in '06
we can keep going around in circles, but how the fuck do YYYs qualify to headline before Massive Attack?
Massive Attack and Phoenix being the same level i'd buy.
